DRAWING LUCKY NAMES AT HOME SHOW ? Shown above are Hal Plonk and Mayor Glee A. Bridges at last weekend's Model Home Show, as the Mayor prepared to draw from the registration box the names of winners of attendance prizes given by Elmer Lumber Company, sponsor of the show. Winner of the grand priie, a Youngstown Disposer, was Mrs. S. A. Crouse, 312 E. King street, while eight mop persons received conso lation prizes, working miniature models of Young* town dishwashers. The consolation win ners were Earline Surber, Mrs. W. K. Crook, Sam Stalling*, Paul K. Falls, Mrs. James V. Pressly. Mrs. Raymond Foster, 1. B. Goforth, and Anthony Ccmsler, of Charlotte. The model home was built and owned by Crescent Hill Development Com pany. of which Mr. Plonk is general manager. A total of 339 persons registered for the prize draw ing. Pass' lassies are undefeated, suffering a tie in the season's opener. / Betty McDonald paced the Com pact scoring against Highland, hitting 16 points. The boys team did not play, Highland taking Charlotte's Second Ward 46-43 in the nightcap of the twin bill. Thte Compact girls came out of the opener against Carver high of Rutherfordton -on December 8 with a 23-33 deadlock, while the boys dropped a close 31-33 con test in the thrilling games. The opener Is to start at 7 p. m. Coach Don Parker is back at the helm of the boys club, with the girls beginning the season under a new coach,' Miss Eliza beth Col lettte, who produced a championship club at Troutman last year. Miss Cojlette did not come to Kings Mountain as the girls bas ketbaH coach but took over the position several weeks ago. Ev crette Carlton, last year's coach, is working with ninth grade teams this year. The boys club features' Center OUie Harris and Forward Milton Hope iback from tast season's starting quint. The pair will be in the starting five Friday, along with Richard George and Don McCarter, a pair, of outstanding reserve guards last season, and Ronnie Layton, rangy forward. Other members of the club are Eddie Goforth, George Harris, Mearl Valentine, David Hullen der, Earl Marlowe, Bot>by Little John. Charles Yelton, Wlnfred White, Jerry Ross and Bobby Raines. The girls club is paced by six letter winners from the 1953 team. Jtuie Ornsand, Pat Davis, Ra chael Jolly and Shirley Ware earned letters last season as guards and Forwards Nora Jane Deese and Nancy Bishop also lettered. In a practice game Friday night at Gastonia, the "Bobcats" held the high scoring Gastonia All Stars, who have rolled over Bel mont Abbey, Lenoir Rhyne J. V.'s and A C. C., to a respectful 60 to 45 score. The locals werte without the services of Bob and David Neill but their positions were filled by Bob Sanders and Bill Harmon who did a good Job guarding Gene Avery and Bob Phillips, two of the top scoring players in this section. Buddy Medlln, Gente Stone and' Walt Harmon each scored 12 points. , Prospects for a successful sea son looked brighter with the ap pearance of Gene Goforth and Carl Wiesener, two 6* 6" men with a lot of basketball knowledge and experience. Gene, a former pro baseball pitcher, is well known locally, attended K. M. high and played basketball on the fast semi-pro team of pevtera} seasons back. Carl attended the U. of Tennessee. The official colors of the re creation teams are red, white and blue and all uniforms Jiavfe been donated by local merchants. Uniforms for the Midgets and Intermediates were given by the Jaycees and Kiwanls. Tentative schedules for the younger groups include games with G Estonia, Concord, Rock Hill, Cramerton, Charlotte, Hickory and Newton. Practice will be held at the gym Saturday from nine to ten-thirty for the midgets and from ten thirty to twelve for the interme diates. The recreation department will have a tenn-age Christmas party, details to be published In next week's Herald.
