GROVER ? The Youth Fellow ship of the Shiloh Presbyterian church and the Young People from the First Baptist church were entertained at a banquet by thte ladies of the Presbyterian church on Saturday evening. Twenty-six young people attend ed. The menu consisted of tomato juice, ham, green beans, maca-' ronj pie, hot rolls, hot chocolate, ice cream and cake. The Rtev. Park Moore gave an inspiring talk on "World Mis sions." During the social hour, the Rev. J. Eade Anderson of Olney Pres byterian church of Gastonia en tertained the young people with magic tricks. Coby Goforth gave "What It Was ? Football". Sev eral games weite played, Mrs. Roy Houser, Mrs. Lucilla Kiser, Mrs. Thelma Hambright, Mrs. Lena Goforth and Mrs. R. C. Tate as sisted with the banquet. There is an epidemic of mumps, measles and chicken pox in the primary departmtent at Grover school. The high school Home Econo mic Department has purchased a new ejectric stove, after selling candies, cookies, pies, cakes, and hand made articles to raise the monfey. The Parent . Teacher associa tion of Grover school met at the school on Monday evening. Mrs. W. B. Harry presided over the business session. Mrs. Glenn Rountree conducted the devotion al. j Mrs. D. A. Moss introduced the guest speaker, Falton Hodge, an international exchange student for the Ford Foundation. The hostesses were Mrs. W. F. Cockrtell, Mrs. W. W. McCarter, Mrs. Roy Houser, Mrs. Edith Jones and Mrs. F. Anderson,, who served delicious refreshments. The Intermediate Girls Auxili ary of the First Baptist church met at the home of Hilda Hern don on Monday. Mrs. W. W. Mc Carter, the feader, met with the 15 members. After an interesting program, Mrs. Harold Herndon and Hilda Herndon served strawberry short cake, potato chips, and colas. Mr. and Mrs. James Byers and daughter, Mrs. J amies Quinn of Spartanburg, S. C., are visiting Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Quinn of San Diego. California Mrs. J. B. Quinn is the former Sybil Byers. Mrs. Fay Tesseneer and daugh ter, Pat, left on Saturday for Kan sas City, Kansas to visit her sis ter, Mrs. V. E. Mattingly who is to undergo surgery this week. Mr. Tessenber accompanied his wife and daughter to Chattanoo ga, Tenn. Mr. and Mrs. Buford Owens of Cherryville were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Hope on Sun day. Mrs. B. P. Hambright of Char lotte spent the weekend at hbr home here. Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Keeter and Miss Sue Keeter spent^unday in Greenville, S. C., with Lt. and Mrs. W. S. Hicks, Jr. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Black and son of Mint Hill wtere dinner guests on Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Watterson. Mrs. Annie Roark, Mrs. Mary Houser, Wilbur Roark and Char les Roark ipet Bruce Roark of Watsonville, California at the air port in Charlotte on Monday. Miss Inez Davis, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Neal and children visited relatives at Great Falls on Sun day. Mrs. W. S. Hicks. Sr., spent sevteral days recently with Lt. and Mrs. "Dub" Hicks of Green ville, S. C. M. C. Pruette and Charles Hou ser, who are employed with Sou thern Bell Telephone Company, and working near Wadesboro, spent the weekend with their pa rents. RECREATION ROUND-UP Basketball The Kiwans - sponsored "Ban tams" continued on their way to an undefeated reason by posting three league wins in the (past seven days. Gastonia Optimist proved to be the toughest opponent to date, holding the local club to only 26 points. Tne final scpre read: Bantams 2b, Optimist 19. Smith with 8, Ledford 7, Mlt chem 6, Horn 3 and Cash and Blantort 2 led the local attack. David Marlowe, out with a virus infection, and Keith Layton out with a fractured finger, were un able to make the trip. On Wed nesday the "Bantams" wallop ed Cramerton 59 to 23 with all members getting a whack at the basket. 'Monday the "Bantams'* journ eyed to Cramerton and took on the rough South Gastonia Olney Presbyterian church team, coa ched by Rev.. Eade Anderson. Af ter- a nlp-and-tuck first half, the "Bantams" pulled way out front by ,18 points before clearing the bench. The final 9core was "Ban tams" 46, Olney 31. Scoring for K. M.: Ledford 12, Cash 9, Mit chem 8, Layton 8. Smith 8, and Marlowe 1. Davis, Graham, Blan ton, G. Layton, Hardin and Short saw action. The "Bantams' " schedule for the remainder of this week finds them playing St. Michaels at Gastonia Memorial Hall, Beth ware 9th graders here, and Rex at Cramerton. The Bethware game will be a doubleheader scheduled at Cen tral gym Saturday at 9 a. m. A nother Btethware team will meet the Jaycees club on the bill. Little Leaguers The Jay-cees Little Leaguers team was host to Olney of Gas tonia at 8 a. m- Saturday morn ing, at tb? local Gym. After a hard-fought jnune, the locals e merged victors by a 42 to 36 score. For the L. L., Dave Plonk had 12 points, Houser 8, Childers 8, Blanton 6, Guyton, Hardin, Wil son and Grant with 2 each. Sellers of Besslemer City, N. C. Corporal Sellers, whose wife, Rebecca, lives at 210 E. Geo. ave., distinguished himself as a service records clerk in the 40th Infan try Division's 223d Reglmfent from last July 1 to October 15. The son of Mrs. Helen Richard, [203 E. Geo. ave., he was cited for working long hours under diffi cult conditions and maintaining an efficiently operating section despite frequent moves, "Through (Corporal) Sellers' efforts," relates his citation, "the reports and surveys required of his section were always complet ed promptly and accurately." The corporal, who has been in Korea since May, also holds thte Combat Infantryman Badge. Baseball Kings Mountain has also been invited to place a team in the here-to-fore strong Gaston Tex tile Baseball League. SlPter Bro thers, local plush manufacturing firm, has indicated interest in the formation of this league and was represented at Monday's meeting by Tommy Reynolds. The National Baseball Con gress, located at Wichita, Kan sas, has asked the recreation de partment if it is interested in forming a team composed of boys in the }8-thru-20 age group. The NBC will sanction a team, they report. The team would compete for a spot in the National tournament held annually at Wichita. The V. F. W. is working on a pian for sponsorship of all Pony League teams in North Carolina, a program similar to the Ameri can Legion Junior Baseball pro gram with only boys who are 15 and under eligible to play. The local Pony League team has been invited to participate in this program. They made plans for the coming fly -up ceremony, and investiture service.
