There Is no substitutute for good manage ment In the poultry business. ? ? '* - . . " ?> * ? ' - ? Proper care will not only cause a chlok to do better but will also prevent a lot of diseases? often the difference between profit and loss. It's a good practice to start chicks right and to keep them right. A chWk's home should be warm, clean and light. House and equipment should be clean ed and disinfected before the chicks arrive. The brooder stove should be given a trial run to make sure it is working properly. With this situation to start with, here are some tips that will help turn those chicka Into profits: Chicks Nsed Spac? 1. Your ctiioks should have plenty of room. Allow one square foot of floor space for every two baby chlok*. A 10 by 12 foot house will accommodate 290 chicks. Don't put too many chicks around a single brooder; a good figure is 250 ? a better one is aoa 2. For 290 chicks, at least 6 two -foot feeders should be provi ded. In the first few days, feed may be placed on paper or egg flats. Have at least 4 one-quart water founts for 390 chicks. If possible place a fount uhder the hover. At 3 weeks, increase feed ers to 9 three-foot troughs snd Increase waterers to 4 one-gallon fountatttfc 3. At the start, you should put down 2 or 3 Inches of clean litter. Add to the litter occassional^ and keep it fresh snd free of dampness. Good ventilation Is vital for removal of foul air and moisture. Make sure that the air circulation is steady but gentle with no Strong drafts. BegeUrte K-y* 4. Start your brotder at 96 de grees end reduce the tempera ture 9 degrees a week until 70 is reached. (Slides should be spread out evenly around the brooder. Use a cardboard guard one foot out from the hover at the start. Move the guard back gradually and remove it entirely about the fifth day.. 5. Encourage early roosting:. Place low, sloping rooete near the hover at 4 weeks. ; Hits will tieip avoid crowding and foul air. Open windows on warm days for ventilation and direct sun light. 'Allow chicks to run out doors as weather permits. i ? "hicks Available Daftf ? Chick Brooders. Fountains, Feeders STARTING LAYING
