A Gastonia resident was found guilty February 8 in Recorder's Court of abandonment and non support of a minor child. Judge Jack White gave Raymond Cabe a 90-day sentence, suspended on condition that he pay via the clerk of recorder's court thte sum of $5 each week for benefit of his minor child, Randall Cabe, until he reaches age of 18 or be comes self-sustaining. Judge White also found Arthur jLiegon guilty of abandonment land non-support of his six chil dren in City Recorder's Court Tuesday afternoon, and sentenc ed him to serve eight months on the road. The sentence was sus pended on condition that Llegon ay $20 each week through the court for support and mainte nance of his six children. The de fendant stated on the witness stand that he knew it was his re sponsibility to support his chil dren, and added he way willing to live with his wife and support his children. ' William R. Goins was found guilty on two counts of passing worthless' checks in the amount of $75. Vternon Crosby, of East King Esso Station, stated on the witness stand that Goins issued a check to him for $25 February 1; and that the check wis return ed to him by the bank marked "insufficient funds." Basil Lovelace of Marlowe's, Inc., also testified a $50 check given to his firm by Goins was also rteturned by the bank marked "insufficient funds". Goins defended his ac [ tions when questioned by Judge White by saying sufficient funds were in the bank when checks were, issued, but that hte later paid a jail fine in Lenoir, de mlnishing his account. The ar resting officer was P. R. Saun ders. ' , A Fort Jackson, S. C.. soldier,' Jessie Green, was found guilty of larceny of a stove lid from the skating rink owned by Mrs. De vola Housfer, and of damage to city property in the amount of $100 while in Jail. When ques tioned by Judge White as to his behavior, the only explanation the defendant could give was "Your Honor, I was drunk." On the count of larceny, Green was given a 60-day sentence, suspend ed on oondiUon that he pay a fine of $10, and costs of court. Qn the count of damage to city property, the defendant also was given a 60-day sentence, suspend ed on condition that he pay costs of- court and costs of damage to city property estimated by a re liable plumber. Officers P. R. Saunders and R. P. Carrigan were the arresting officers. Three were found guilty of pub lic drunkenness, <> and one case was continued. Thte cases of John J. Johnson, Elvia Anthony and Coy FTedell were transferred to Shelby by Judge White for Jury trail. Judge White also ordered capiases be Issued for John Dawklns and Wil liam Mitch um. 67 Citizens Give Pint of Blood Kings Mountain area citizens donated 67 pints of blood to .the area Iblood bank last Thursday, as the Red Cross Bloodmobile made a one-day visit at the Wo man's Club. "We still need qualified men to bring the company up to authoriz ed strength," he said yesterday. Capt. Houston explained that the purpose of the National Guard Is to furnish, In event of a national emergency, citizen - sol diers trained and equipped in peacetime and effectively organi zed for rapid mobilization, expan. slon and deployment. The Guard also plays a major role, he added, in assisting in relieving civilian distress in tornados, floods and other civil disasters. "Membership in the National Guard has several important ad vantages," he emphasized. "A mong them are the fulfillment of a patriotic obligation to one's country, substantial pay and re tirement benefits, educational op portunities, and opportunities for promotion for those taking an ac tive part in National Guard ac tivities."
