Tie For First Place Hand Wolves Second Loss By 42-41; Sextet Drops Opening Game 90-45 Kings Mountain high school's boys handed Lincolnton its se cond loss ol the season at Lincoln ton Friday night to go into a first place tie with the Wolves in South Group, Western A A Conference standings. The scorte was 47-41 in the torrid feature, but Lincolnton gained a split in the twin bill as its undefeated sextet took the opener 90-45. > The Mountaineers went into the lead tearly in the boys scrap and, although tied six times during the next 8 minutes, "scratched off" to an 8-point advantage, 23 15, at the half and were never headed. V * OUie Harris, big gun for Kings Mountain with 20 points for the evening, started thte scoring with a free throw but Don Chapman stole the ball and passed in to John Dysart for the first field goal of the game to put the losers ahead at 1-2. Darrell Bost stole the ball a gain and passed in to Emmett Michatel for a drive-in basket to put Lincolnton out front 1-4. The losers were playing a zone- press defense and used it to good ad vantage in the. opening minutes. I Harris added another free toss | and Milton Hope hit a push shot ! from outside to pull Kings Moun- | tain teven at 4-ail, Harris' third straight charity toss put the Mountaineers out front for the first time at 5-4. The next 8 minutes of action was torrid, with Kings Mountain breaking away on an 8-point scor ing spree during the latter half of the second period while hold ing the Wolves scoreless. Dysart intercepted a pass after Harris had controlled a Lincoln ton rebound but Harris again came down with the ball off the losers' backboard. Bost intercept ed another pass but the Moun taineers' defense held. Hope foul ed Dysart, who made his second - shot on a one-and-one to tie it up at 5-all. . Richard George put Kings Mountain back in business but Dysart bucketed a rebound after three Lincolnton misses to run thp count tn 7-?ll Bost matched, Hopte's field goal with his favorite shot, a two-handed Jump push from the side, to do it up at 9 all. Harris* fourth straight free throw gave Kings Mountain a 10 9 advantage at the end of the flrqt \ quarter. Harris added the second of two free shots but fouled Clifton Link a few seconds later, Link sinking both shots to run thte string to 11 all. Ronnie Layton hit a goal but Dysdrt followed with a long hook to move the score to 13-13. George's set- shot goal was mat ched by Bosts' two free throws to knot the count at 15-all and set the stage for Kings Mountain's game-winning effort George who had 11 points in ' the game, started the scoring streak with a foul shot. Layton took down a rebound on a long set-shot miss by Ernie Lippard and took a pass from Harris for a drive-in goal. Layton intercept ed a Lincolnton pass and Bost fouled George, who made both shots. Hope made his second shot on a 1-and-L. Harris control! ed a rebound off the Lincolnton board and took a pass from Hope on a rtebound play under the Kings Mountain board to .add the final goal of the first half. With the action growing pro gressively rougher as time elaps ed, Lincolnton utilized the press I to full advantage to cut the Moun taineer lead down to four points early in the final chapter but the winners held on and rode out the storm; Kings Mountain, exhibit ing stellar defensive play, never allowed the margin to go under four points. Harris increased the lead to 10 but Bost cut it to seven with a free throw and a goal. Lippard hit a free throw and Michael stole the ball for a layup to close the gap to 37-33. McCarter and Bost swapped goals. George hit a dribble-in and a free throw to run the margin iback to 7. Chap man changed -that with a long set shot and Michael hit one of two free throws to cut il back to four. With two and one-half min. utes left, Harris hit two free throws. Lippard got two charity shots, offset by Harris again with two from the free throw line. Hope (pulled down a jump ball with two minutes left and the winners (began running out tlie time. McCarter made one of two foul shots and Chapman made it 47-41 on a free throw on a technical on George. With three seconds, left, George missed two shots on the line. Nancy Bishop paced the pluckly Kings Mountain sextet with 33 points and Derlce Weir had 6. Maybelle Aderholdt had 45 for Lincolnton and Billle Cashlon added 22 as Coach Jack Riser's charges werte not to be stopped. Lincolnton kept pouring on the pressure as Coach Klser, evident ly shooting for the century mark, played his starting forwards most of the way and used only two forward subs sparingly. Central Teams Drop 3 Games At Lincolnton Kings Mountain high dropped a triple-header at Lincolnton last Thursday,- the hoys "B" team los ing 56-51, the "B" girls falling short at 55-33 and the boys fresh man team taking a 50-32 licking. Ronnie Cole paced the "B" boys effort with 18 points ,* Pete Falls had 12 and Jerry McCarter 11. Kings Mountain jumped off to a quick lead, 15-S at the first turn, | and was ahead at the half 32-20. Polkville'fc lassies closed strong to catch up with Bethware, who had led for the first three periods and the count at the end of the regulation game was 39-all.
