Mildred Peterson In Oratory Contest Miss .Mildred Peterson repre sented Ilethwaro school in the Cleveland County Oratorical Con test held at Shelby Wednesday afternoon, under sponsorship of the North Carolina Bankers as sociation and local area member banks. Miss PetbrSo'n won the prize for Bethware school offered by the First National Bank. Subject of the contest is "The Big Change"', designed to show the progress of the state during the past 50 years, an1 to acquaint youths with their opportunities in North Carolina; Kings Mountain high school and Grover high school had no entries. Skirts for Spring Alley Cats Blaze To New Team Mark With Each Member Hitting Over 300 ?? i Wlt/i every member hitting ov er 300, the rampaging Alley Cats burned up the Shelby Community Center alleys Monday night to] set a new team one-match record for the season in Kings Mountain Bowling League. The 'Cats scored 1602 points in the three lines to smash the Indepehdents by 215 pins, 1602 1387. Jim Hamrlck led the assault with 331 points, Boyd Howell had 321, Paul Ware 317, W. D. Morri son 316 and Capt. Arrowood was low man at 307. Howell's 126 was good for high line. Capt. Albert Brackett placed th'e losers at 318. In the other match, the Moun taineers gained a tie with the Luckies for second* place via a close 1446-1404 verdict. Jack Clark, with a 316, and Fred Wright, Jr., with 313, paced the wlnnters, while Capt. Furman Wil son's 306 was high for the losers. Clark's 126 was the high line. Hullender Child In juried Tuesday Keith Hullender, four-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Nell Hullen der, is in a serious condition at Kings Mountain hospital as a re sult of injuries received in an ac cident late Tuesday afternoon, Mrs. Hullbnder was also admit ted to the hospital with injuries sustained in the same accident, which took place in the driveway at the Hullender home. According to Chief of Policfe Hugh A. Logan, the child and his mother started to entter the car from the left side. Before getting In, the child turned the switch, causing the car to start rolling. The door of the car caught the child, knocking him under the wheel. Mrs. Hullender also toas struck down. The wheel ran over the child's body and over Mrs. Hullender's knee. A series of prayer meetings have been held in the following homes prior to the re vival meeting which begins Wed nesday night. At the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Eaker, Mr. and Mrs. P. K. Anthony, El Bethel church. Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Nteals .and 'at the home of Mrs. Frank Goforth. Rev. G. W. Flftk of Mocksville will assist the pastor. Rev. Boyce Huffstetler,; Mr. Fink, a retired minister and evangelist, served as conference evangelist for the Western North Carolina confer ence of the Methodist church for a number of years. He is a former pastor of Grace Methodist church in Kings Mountain. Services will begin Wednesday evening at 7:30 and will be held nightly through March 21. A varied program has been arranged for the North Carolina Press Association's first mechanical conference to be held at North Carolina State College Saturday and Sunday, March 13 and 14. Program details for the two day conference were announced today by Macy Hoyle, mechani cal superintendent of The Smith field Herald and chairman of the conference's committee on ar rangements. The program, Hoyle said, was designed for th< special benefit of the mechanical staffs of the | state's newspapers. Hoyle said thte principal objec tive of the conference is to pro vide newspaper mechanical per sonnel opportunities for profes sional improvement such as are now offered editors, nbws photo graphers, news writers, and fea ture writers at similar confer ences.
