Driver Of Booze Cat Sentenced Nivans Plato Carpenter of York, S. C.. drew a suspended sentence Monday afternoon in Recorder's court on charges of transporting nontax paid li quor. Carpenter pled guilty to the charges and Judge Jack Whitp gave the defendant 18 months on the roads, suspended upon con dition that he be of good behav ior for 18 months, J>ay a fine of $200, and costs of court. Judge White also ordered the Chief of Police to sell the defendant's car at public auction, and order ed the liquor destroyed. According to Officer Paul San ders, who collaborated with Of ficer Warren Ellison in making the arrest, 24 gallons of non-tax paid liquor was found in Carpen ter's car after he had been ap prehended March 18, at a road block at the interseclion of York road and Bennett street. Carl E. Childers of Cramerton and Alexander Gordon of Kings Mountain pled nolo contendere to driving drunk. Both defend ants were given nine months on the roads, sentences suspended on condition that they be of good behavior for one year, pay a fine of $100, cos^s of court, and that their drivers' licenses be revoked for a period of one year. Two Negro women, Ophelia Wilson and Nina Mitchem, were found guilty of assault, and each defendant received 30 days in the county jail. Judgment was suspended in each case on pay ment of costs of court. On passing sentence. Judge White remarked that this affray was simply a neighbor's "-squab ble," which could have .been set tled out of court. Donald Wilson, Jr., Negro, was found guilty as charged on the count of using profane language in a public place. Wilson was gi-. ven 30 days on the roads, sen tence suspended on payment of costs of court. Victor Gillespie, who is fight ing extradition to South Caroli na, was ordered by Judge White to be held in tffe county Jail for 30 days or until extradition pa pers are received by the Jailer.
