STRETCHING YOUR
DOLLARS
© by Philip J. Goldberg
Cliairnian, Institute for Financial Planning Inc.
Rppenlly a friotui nf miiip bad
his incomn t,ix retuin I'liallong-
Pd. He bad negleetod to keep ii‘-
eeipts of bis contributions to
charity. Therefore, bis claimed
deduction was not allowed and,
moreover, ho lost the best part
of a WO!king day appearing bp.
tore the review board.
Contrary to popular belief,
there is no "average amount”
w’hicb can be legally claimmi as
a charitable deduction. You are
entilled only to the e.xact amount
of your contributions, and you
are expected to liave in your
possession all the records ne^ed
neexted to prove the validity of
your claim.
As a general rule, the totol of
your contributions are not ex
pected to exceed more than 20
percent of your total inco.me.
However, you may add an atldi-
tional 10 percent if the money
went o religious, charitable, sci
entific. literary or educational
organizations. Only an outright
gift is deductible. Scliool or col
lege tuition is not considered a
contribution.
In addition to church contribu
tions, yc.i are entitled to claim
all contributions made to non
profit schools and hospitals, the
Salvation Army, Red Cross, Com
munity Chest, Camp Fire Girls,
Boy and Girl Scouts, voluntary
health organizations, non-profit
organizations and societies for
the prevention of cruelty to chil-
drlen and animals.
The key word when estimating
non-cash contributions is “fair
market value’. If you attended
a theatre party wliich donated
all proceeds to a recognized char,
ity, you are entitled to deduct the
normal cost of the play .or enter
tainment from tlie total amount
of the ticket and list the differ
ence as a contribution.
If you hid $10 for a box lunch
at a church sponsored affair,
end the lunch has a lair market
value of $1.50, you may deduct
the remaining $.s;..50. The fair
market value of household goods
or articles donaietl to a charita
ble agency may also be claimed,
but don’t forget to ask lor a re
ceipt.
\’’oluntiepr hospital workers
may deduct transportation e.x-
penses to and from work, includ-
mg gas and oil, the cost of any
"eciuircd uniform plus laundering
expenses a diithe cost of meals
and lodgin.g incurred when vol
unteering services. Den Mothers
for the Brownies, Cub Scouts,
Girl and Boy .Scouts may deduct
travel expenses for field trips as
well as thecost of refreshments
served at group meetings.
Church delegates can deduct
transportation, meals and loflg-
Ing while attending church liusi-
less unless they have previously
een compensated for their serv-
"es or reimbursed for their cx-
'enses.
Paintings, bonds, .securities, ob-
iects of art which are donated to
a religious or charitable institu
tion are also deducted at the fair
market value. A painting pur
chased for $100 two years Vie-
fore may tx' worth either more
or less than tlie original invest
ment. In either case, you should
ieport the current market value.
If you have any questions on
how you can STRFTrCH YOUR
DOLLAR.S more effectively, send
them to me at the Institute for
Financial Planning, Inc., P. O.
