AX OF CONGRE.S.S
This session of Congress may
well go down in American his
tory a.s marking the death knell
•of ivpresonlativc government
and the birth of an o.xpanded
welfare state ruled by centraliz
ed federal pou er.
The so-called medicare bill
which perverts tlie original con
cept of the Social Security sys
tem is now law. It is the first
step toward a complete system
of medical and hospital care un
der the complete domination of
the federal govern.ment.
The U. S. Senate is currently |
considering a constitutional a- i
mendment which would permit |
states to decide how they should |
elect their legislators. If this a- j
mendment fails, rural and farm :
people will lose their right to j
representative government .
The U. S. House has voted to j
remove Section 14 (b) of the;
Taft-Hartley Act. and if the U. S. I
Senate follows this lead, North j
Carolina and eighteen other,
states will lose their right-to- .
work laws. Human and .state '
rights will be the loser to central i
government and the labor czars. I
The U. S. House has voted for
an expanded anti-poverty pro
gram and has stripped state gov
ernments of any veto power over
pro.jects in their states. There is '
speculation that the real ob.iec- i
live of the anti-poverty program
is not to provide jobs or educa
tion for the poor and untrained. !
but to build a political following
of poverty clients who will re- '
ceive their votin.g instructions [
directly from the party chiefs in
Washington. j
The old political pork barrel 1
I projects of the past now appear
I as puny devices when compared
I with the direct pipeline from the
I federal treasury to the millir-ns
1 of medicare and anti-poverty
program clients. This pipeline
I will be enlarged with rent sUb-
I sidies under a new federal hous-
1 ing law.
Meanwhile, another pineline
I i seems to be out of order. That’s
I the one that carries the U. S.
citizen’s opinions to the fixmt
office in Washington. It has been
out by the ax of Congress.
