Mr. Lineberry -staled that the approved draft has been for warded to interested persons, groups, and organizations for comment and suggestions. N'aiional Selected Morticiansis a .society of .SOO funeral director.s locatisl in tlie United Slates. Canada, Mo.vico, Great Britain, Europe, Ceylon, Australia and New Zealand. Its headquarters are located in Evanston, Illinois. The Code contains 2.3 stand ards of good practice to guide member funeral directors in their relationshiixs with the public, their clients and the clergy. The Board of K.SM has given tile Codo its interim approval wliich will be confirmed after careful analysis of public re sponse and suggestions received following publication of the doc ument. President Lineberry stated: "An informed public has always been a primary objective of N.SM. It is our hope that tlie Code will prove of benefit to Hie public and to X.SM members a- like. We invito and solicit sug- .gestion.s from all interested per sons and organizations, not only now, but anytime in the future.” Among the Code's more signi ficant paragraphs is provision 11, which requires the me.mber fune ral director - - “to furnish to every purchaser at the time of purchase a mem orandum or other document which contains an accurate ac counting of all charges, including all merchandise, sei viees and fa cilities listed in the offered price, and to charge for no further or additional items of e.vpense, c.\- cept with the express autlioriza- tion of the purchaser." The necessitv of a wide selec tion of funeral services is also recognized in the Code. Pro\ isinn 3 calls upon every mcm ;cr fune ral director "to offer funeral services in as wide a range of rategorios as pos.-iible so that any person may select a funeral .service which is ; within liis means.” I Similarly, provisi n 10 reriuire.s the memiK'r funeral direct.ir to . jilainly mark tlie piice of each I funoral. to enumerate the Uenis ; included in the i>rice. and to iier- . mil everyone tlie pvivilegi of in specting -and freely considering every funeral service off.’tcd. '■ Provi.sion 13 sets forth llic oh- ’ li.gation j “to avoid an.v representation, 'written or oral, which ma.v he I false or mislearling.” ' Provision 11 call-s upon every funeral director ■ “fn case of hardship, to accept ' tlie obligation of providing a funeral service within the finan- I cial means of the family, how- ! ever limited." The Code also underscores the principle that the funeral cere mony is a religiou.s oliservance. Code provisions l.j, 16 and 17 provide that in all religious mat ters the clergy shall b<.‘ in cliarge; the funeral director shall cooperate with the clergy at all times; and that all services will be conducted in a manner tliat complies fully with the instruc tions of the clergyman actin.g for the family. The Code conciudes with a pledge to "conduct liusiness at all times in a dignified, respect ful. and professional manner; and to ob.serve in every transac tion the principle that our re sponsibility to the public and thase vve serv'e is above all oth ers.” Copies of the proposed Code have been forwardetl to interest ed persons, greups, and organi zations in the hope that construc tive comments and suggestions may result before the interim approval given bv the Boaid of National Selected Morticians is confirmed. Mr. Linehoriw. in addition to «erving as president of N.SM. is owner and president of Hancs- Lincticiry Funeral Service in Grecniboro, North Carolina. Why Wait?
