C., TKursclay, October 7, 1965 Thursday, OecemiBer 9, !96S 4-H Piogiam Helps Teens With Driving “Driving an automobile is one of the greatest privileges we have as American citizens," said the only girl to claim national honors last year in the 4 H Au tomotive program. And this year, North Carolina has a national winner in the automotive pro gram. Jerry West, IS, son of .Mr. and Mrs. W. L. West, Fremont, Rt. 1. will receive a $.500 scholarship from the Firestone Tire & Rub ber Company West has been in club work line years and has completed 30 projects. He hopes to use the scholarship to enter Wayne Technical Institute for training for a career in diesel mechanics. Right now throughout the state scores of term-age licensed driv ers and pre-drivers are undergo ing practical and intensive train ing outlined in the national 4-H Automotive program conducted by the Cooperative Extension Service. This program is the only one of its kind in the United States making an effort to reach pre drivers. Young people do not be come instant experts in driving when they get their license. Many boys and girls do not have the judgment necessai-y to cope with modern day traffic and improper driving attitude. Not having the right attitude contributes up to 85 per cent of the traffic acci dents. Young people enrolled in the 4-H Automotive program learn about the mechanical function of the vehicle, develop the prope. attitude and take part in traffic surveys before they get behind the wheel. They not only have cafefuily plannerl “lesson.s” hut hear from experts such as auto motive engineers, traffic offic ers, safety autorities, insuiante representatives and mechanics. Information about enrollment in the 4-H program can be ob tained from the county extension agent. Tie«-Selecting Tips Given Almost 50,000,000 Christmas Trees, averaging about one to every four Americans, are near ing their ultimate rendezvous. The U. S. Navy placed its order early for 70,000 trees. More families than ever are muiC' expected this year to participate, in the "choose and cut" method 1 of buying. Many now like to make an outing to a commercial tree farm where they can^ pick their own trees while they’re in the ground, then get a little ex ercise in cutting them. Wherever you get your tree, Changing Times, the Kiplmpr magazine, offers this advice. Look for one with balanced, pyr amidal form, well balanced on all sides and with strong limbs Check to see that it is fragrant and with lustrous, smooth deep- green foliage. Try to avoid a tree with dry, yellow - tipped needles, the tell tale warning that they will soon start droj)- ping to your floor. Store the tree in a cool, pro tected place away from sun a.ul wind. Rain or snow outdooco will keep it fresh and moist. When you bring it indoors, saw a fresh cut on the butt end to aid ab sorption, then place it in a con tainer of water. During the holi days, the tree will look a lot bet ter if you keep it in a large pail or jardiniere, with plenty of wa ter. Moomaw Attending Technician School BAINBRIDGE. MD.
