The origin of some of the tra
ditions of Christmas activities
aftd decorations w'as traced by
Mrs. J. E. Herndon at the meet
ing of the Home Arts clu-a Tues
day evening at the home of Mrs.
Harold Crawford.
“American observance of the
holiday is unique," Mrs. Hern-
dbn said, "because it is a com
posite of tile practices both pag
an and Christian, of many lands,
with the addition of some of our
own customs.”
Stating that the Christmas
tree is America’s primary symbol
of the season she said, "the tree
jis topped by a shining star, re-
uniniscent of Bethlehem; the
lights tell us that Christ is the
light of the world; the decoia-
tk>ns say that Christ is the rose
that blooms amid winter’*
snows; the gifts say that Christ
is God's greatest gift to the
world; the evergreens are sym-
tx>llc of life everlasting and the
tree, itself, declares that Christ
Is the tree of life."
Mrs. N. F. McGill presided
over the business session.
Mrs. Crawford, whose house
was beautifully decorated with
poinsettias and Christmas green
ery, wa* assisted by her daugh
ter, Miss Jane Crawford, in
serving a cianberry salad course
with accessories and passing des
sert.
