HEART NEWS BUREAU i population studies have turned oLTADinT .-I . ..T . I up some striking correlations be- tween overweight and heart dis- to- Lase and diabetes. T, f f. t n f I Eating too much is not all. A- ancient fatalistic ex-'i n-ericans also eat too much of pression, medical researchers! have in recent years added , the wrong things—namely fats, .. ,, ® i says Dr. Keys. Typically 40-45 prophet c corollary: Depending | J^s’-st of on what you eat, tomorrow may fat, the bulk of which is of the animal or saturated variety (found in butter, cream, whole milk and beef) rather than the polyunsaturated kind (e.g., most „ . A , vegetable oils, poultry and fish). For one, irost Americans eat too much . . . and that goes for come a lot sooner thgn it need to, America’s eating habits, it seems, may be a bit of a short cut to death, says the North Caro lina Heart As.sociation. Tar Heels too. So^ observed Dr, Ancel Keys, notcil physiologist who heads the Department of Physical Hygiene at the Univers ity of Minne.sota in Minneapolis and directs a worldwide study aii^d at uncovering the reasons why nations’differ widely in their death rates from heart attacks. On the average, he says, Amer icans devour a':out 3,000 calories daily while 2,3(X) would nourish them quite amply. The result ac cording to life insurance com pany figures is that 48 million Americans are butter-balling a- bout with excess avoirdupois. And SICIAl SECSiin III lUWHI Q—-My child will be IS next year. He plans to continue in school. Will his benefits continue? A—^Yes, provided he is taking a full-time course in an approved school. Practically all h ig h schools and colleges are approv ed. Get in touch with us a month or two before he is 18 and let us know what he will be in school. Q—I am a student in college and am eligible for benefits un der social security. This summer I want to work during my vaca tion. Will this affect my receiving monthly benefits? A—Every beneficiary is sub ject to a retirei.rent test. That is. .n 1966, you can earn up to $1500 lor the year and get all benefits. If you work during summer Va cation and earn over $1500; some of the benefits for any month in which you have earned mare than $125 may be withheld. Q—Does it make any difference ! what kinds of schools a persons \ goes to to be eligible for student’s benefits? A--:Yes. Correspondence schools some night-schools or part-time courses, and unaccredited stchools not approved by the Social Se curity Administration are not in cluded as being “full-time cours es”, Q—Hardly anyone goes to school 12 inr.ianths of the year. If I get child’s benefits while in school, what happens during the summer months when I won’t be a student? Are any payments made for the vacation time? A—Yes. If you intend to return to school full-time in the fall, your benefits will continue dur ing summer vacation, or during any period of 4 months or less that you are out of school and under 22. Saturated fats increase blood levels of clioU?sterol. And re searchers have accumulated quite a stockpile of data showing a striking relationship between blood levels of cholesterol and the risk of heart attack. That is, the higher the blood cholesterol, the greater the risk. Underlying most heart attacks —killer of a half-million Amer icans a year—is hardening of the arteries, in which deposits of fat ty material, mostly ' tholesterol, p'1o up on the inner lining of the blood vessels like rust in a pipe and interfere with the blood flow. When this occurs in the coronary arteries that nourish the heart muscle, some of the muscle cells die for the lack of oxygen. The result is a heart at tack. Question: In the light of the connection between excess blood cholesterol and heart disease, would cutting down on fat calor ies and substituting polyunsatur ated for saturated fats wherever possible help reduce the heart at tack risk? Many scientists believe it will —at least in future .generations. Dr. Keys sums it up this way: “We are pretty convinced that if you started with children, put them on a low-fat, cholesterol-re ducing diet and then followed them for 50 years, you would end up with substantially less athero sclerosis and fewer heart attacks.
