Families in this area will be
included in a nationwide survey
of smoking habit.s as part of the
June Current Population Survey
of the Bureau of the Census, ac
cording to Director Joseph R-
Norwood of the Census Regional
Office in Charlotte.

households of 357 sample ai'cas
of the nation.
The questions on smoking,
which are sponsored by the U. S.
Department of Health, Educa
tion & VVclfai'e, will be asked of
all persons 17 years old or over
to deter.rr.ine if the' nerson has
smoked at least 100 cigarettes in
his life; if he smokes cigai’ettes
now; how many a day; if he
smoked ci.garette.s three years
ago, and if so, how many a day
at that time.
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
% teaspoon soda i
1 cup raisins
1 tablespoon caraway seeds
1% cups buttermilk
Vi cup cooking oil
Resift flour with baking
powder, salt and soda. Toss
in raisins and caraway seeds.
Add buttermilk and cooking
oil. Mix just enough to mois-'
ten dry ingredients. Shape
dough into two mounds on
greased baking sheet. Cut,
deep cross in top of each loaf
with sharp knife. Bake in
moderate oven (350 degrees)
50 minutes. Makes 2 loaves.
Persons also will bo asked if
they have quit smoking cigar
ettes for two weeks or longer
during the last three years; how
many times they have^ stopped
smoking for wo weeks or longer
during the last three years, and
what vva.s the longest period of
abstinence from . cigarettes dur-
in.g the last throe years.
In addition, males will be ask
ed about cigar and pipe smoking
habits at the present and over
the last three .years. Information
obtained from individuals by the
Census Bureau is confidential by
law and can be used for statisti
cal purposes only.
