C. State Motor Club warns may snuff out lives of at least 24 persons on North Carolina’s streets and high ways during the long holiday period. The state will officially count its holiday highway 'fatalities from 6 p.m. Friday, July 1, through midnight Mond:ay, July 4, fbr a period of 78 hour^, ^or the same period last year', North Carolina’s traffic toll skyrocket ed to 28 killed and 685 injured in 950 accidents. Leading driver violations re ported were: speeding, 214; drove left of center, 169; follow ed too closely, 104; faild to yield right of way, 84; and reckless driving, 49. 'Traffic congestion on national holiday weekends averages three times normal, and July Fourth is worst of all, Thomas B Watkins, president of the motor’ club and the National Automobile Associa tion, said, in cautioning that “your chances of becoming in volved in an accident increase accordingly.’’ “Hot-headed motorists with expiosive ‘ temperaments 'and fuses can be far more dangerous than firecrackers. Allen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Allen, Route 1, Box 482, York Rd. Kings Moun tain, N_ C., was commissioned an Army second lieutenant after graduating from the Officer Candidate School at the Artillery and . Missile Center, Fort Sill, Okla., June 14. Gunnery was the primary sub ject taught during the 23-week course, designed to prepare men for officer duties in field artil lery units. Lieutenant Allen was also trained in artillery survey and transport, communications, map and aerial-photo reading, elec tronics, counterinsurgency and leadership.
