While strolling with a friend
through his well planned and
managed nur.sery, we wandered
into the woods adjoining a large
planting of Japane.se Holly (Ilex
erenata convexa). There we found
a rather unusual scale insect at-
tmhed to the stem of a wild
azalea ("honeysuckle”).
I brought a specimen to the
office and gave it to one of our
co-workeni in Entomology who
identified it a.--- mining scale,
Howardia bit lavis. Frankly, I had
not seep this typo bofoip. i
Mining is a gootl word for this
one because the in.seet .seems to’
mine into the tissues causing lit
tle shallow craters to develop.

THE TRAVELERS ... In at least one slate, wc'rc told,
there are six phones that just won’t stay put. Whieh is all
right, beeausc they aren't supposed to. These six are al
ways off to fairs, eonventions. sporting events, wbere\er
people gather. Aetually, they're public telephones that
travel on wheels, towed by a trailer truck. It’s their job to
relieve the communications jam in places where coin
telephones arc in heavy, but tem
porary, demand. Every day, of
course, people are hcad-

it’s not so often
that public
phones head
for people!
BIG MYSTERY, SMALL CULPRIT . . . Bell Telephone
Laboratories, a few years back. w:ls asked to analyze a
tacky film deposit on the contact points of a telephone re
lay that wouldn't operate properly. The film, they dis
covered, was partly comptssed of an insulating varnish nor
mally used on such relays. But there w;is another sub
stance they couldn’t seem to identify—until fui thcr investi- •
gation turned up an ant nest hidden in the relay box.
So, for the good of science, several of the ants were pain
lessly done in, dried, ground into powder, and subjected to
infrared analysis. Sure enough, the powder matched the
mysterious substance on the relay. Apparently the culprit
ants, bent on the theft of varnish flakes, walked between
the contact points and were electrocuted.
