Sbep Season
Is At Hand
tn a statement just released by!
the Director of the Health De-j
partment, area residents were re
minded that “Strep" season is^
here. "From now through
Spring", said Dr. Tom Morton of|
the Cleveland County Health De-j
partment, “is the period when
many so-called "strep” infactions,
occur. Striking anyone regardless >
of age, they can be far more dan
gerous to health than many pco-'
pie might suspect.” I
A “strop” infection, the Health j
Director explained, gets its name!
from a scientific term for the!
bacteria which produce the in-|
fection — streptococcus. He stat
ed that only certain types of
these bacteria are harmtul and!
that sore throat is the most com
mon indication of infection by
them. Usually entering the body
through the mouth, these micro
scopic organisms tan grow rapid- ■
li>’ under favorable conditions
found in the throat. As they mul
tiply, a substance irritating to the
throat membranes is given off
causing the familiar raiw, sore
feeling of “strep” thrpat. Fever]
generally accompanies it, said the
Doctor.
Mild to severe sore throat, how- ^
ever, is not the only possible re
sult of this infection. Or. .Morton'
emphasized. Streptococcal infec-i
tions, especially in children, can!
spread to or begin in other parts
of the body. Scarlet Fever can be
a serious disease of childhood al-!
so caused by certain of these bac- ’
teria. Rheumatic Fever, in which ! _
there may be damage to the
heart, an da mild to severe type,
of kidney disorder are two com- i
plications which can arise from
"strep" infection; also chronic i
ear disease may occur, as weil as!
chronic sinusitis.
Because the course of strepto-'
coccal infection cannot be pre--
dieted, it is best to see your fam-1
ily physician when sore throat
appears, the Doctor pointed out.
The physician may take a “swab" :
of the throat, a painless proce- ;
dure that is done in order to
identify the infecting organism.;
For streptococcai infections, spe- '
cific medicine which will destroy
the bacteria can be prescribed.
Through this early detection and
eradication of “strep" bacteria,
later damage to vital bod(>’ organs
may be prevented.
^ Dr. Morton cautioned that
“strep” infections are contagious,
the bacteria being spread mainly
by direct or close contact between
people. The ideal conditions for
epidemic spread of “strep” bac
teria aie found in crowded, con
fined areas. Hence, early detec
tion of such infections offers a
good preventive measure.
In closing. Dr. Morton stated,
“Even though streptococcal infec
tions may only produce minor
sore throat pain, people should
not overlook the fact that a ma
jor medical problem with serious
consequences can spring from
it." He then issued this plea:
“During this ‘strep’ season your
health department is urging you
to seek qualified medical atten
tion when mem'bers of your fam
ily. particularly your children,
complain of sore throat."

.any middle aged and el-
aerly persons suffer from
softening of the bones called
osteoporosis, due to a grad
ual loss of calcium in the
bones. They become brittle,
deformed, and easily frac
tured. Bones contain 99%
of the body's calcium; they
are living tissue and are
constantly changing. Stud
ies over several years show
that nearly all os'teoporosis
patients had a low calcium
level in their diet, and that
by drinking more milk, the
calcium level in the body
improved. To prevent bone
softening, a daily intake of
at least one gram of calcium
(3 glasses of milk) plus ad
equate protein, vitamins D
and C, IS recommended.
