Loaves 89 TbufMey- IARD[II III ni.e.pdnei i.c.stale college Roses! Roses! White varieties I should I plant? There are so manyfine varieties available that the question boils down tp one o£ personal choice. A kilowatt Is 1,000 watts. Linen Is probably man's oldest libef. I rcriuosted two of my tiicnds, both retired and avid rosariins, to give me a list of the varieties they like best. I think it sigiifi- cant to note that only one varie ty, Tropicana, was preferred bj both. This gives credanco to the personal choice assumption. Cheese may have been made 4,(KX) years ago. Friend Number One; .\lr. Lin coln I dark red); Garden Party (white); American Heritage (pink); Tropicana (orange); Hel en Traubel (pink); and John S. Armstrong (red). Friend Number Two: Tiffany I pink); Crimson Glory (red; Tropicana (orangeI; Queen Eliza beth (pink); and Pink Parfait. Along with these varieties he likes two climbers: New Dawn (pink); and Blaze (red). He tells me that New Dawn is a prolific bloomer and about as free of in sect and disease troubles as any variety he grows. "The blooms ai-e almost as large as hybrid- teas but the stems are not as long.” Another piece of information he gave me was this: "1 never prene my plants until all danger of freezing has passed and bud growth is initiated on the stems. This permits me to prune moie intelligently because I can see which buds are going to func tion." This is a good idea. If you fol low his procedure, more care will' be necessary when pruning .so' that the tender buds will not be' injured when removing old stems.: ■Many times I have reminded you about the desifability df fall plowing the garden area and leaving in roush fallow so that alternate freezing and thawing could break up the soil particles! and destroy hibernating insects. This is especially inportant fori the heavier soils. At the same' time the soil should have been tested and lime and phosphate requirements plowed under. ' If you have neglected doing this, it is not too late to have the soil tested, lime and phosphate requirements determined a n d turned under when you prepare the soil for planting this spring.'
