Certainly, these problems are related as are a whole range of issues that spring from them. Both have pre occupied the country’s leaders for a lonigi time. Both leave us few al- temativea and neither susceptable to eaay anerwers. ’This was’ dra- matically illustrated by the debate last week on the 19^ Omnibus Housing bill in the House of Rep resentatives. One of the important victims of inilation has bron the nation’s home building industry. At a time when the need for housing is as suming critical proportions in many communities, mortgage cre dit has all -but dried up. Even when financing; for housing can be found, home builders and home buyers musf- face the highest in- lerest rates in a hundred years. The problem of “tight money’ means drastic reductions in the nulhber of new homes being built, i'ftds, in turn, creates new pres- '.skuies that add to the cost of 'both thf Ownership of homes and the cost of renting as well. Interest rate increases, unfortu nately, are often discussed as though they were a- basic prob lem. Actually, they are a symptom ; of a sickness in our economy that IS requiring strong and disagree able rijedicine to treat. This is the price' we are paying for the red ink on the 'Federal ledger during the phst few years and soaring Interest rates take their place be side high taxes and other equally painful signs that all is not well With OUr fiscal health. The Presi dent, in a recent nationwide broad cast outlined the steps he believes necessary td deal with the alarm ing threat that inflation poses. He has been gifard^ly optimistic that efforts already taken to apply the brakes to cpst-of-living increases are showing signs of success since the economy seems to be respond ing to restraints in spending that have been instituted this year. A—No, you will have to wait until after the end of the year before you can file your return. To avolH delays when you file for your refund, check now to make sure you have the W-2 statement of wages paid and taxes withheld your employer gave you when you left. A copy of this statement must be filed with your return. Q—Will enough be taken out of my pay to cover the surcharge? A — Withholding rates have been adjusted to take care of the income tax surcharge. For most people, withholding should be sufficient to satisfy their tax li abilities this year. Q—The IRS auditor who exam ined my return says I owe S65 more. Can I get a further hearing on my case without getting in volved with legal fees and the like? lA—^Yes, you may request a dis trict conference and present your side of the dispute to an impar tial third party. It will not be necessary for you to engage legal counsel to represent you at the conference. It also is not neces sary to file a formal iwrltten pro test to obtain a conference since the tax involved is less than $2,- .500. Procedures far requesting a conference are outlined In a let ter you will receive from IRS set ting forth the results of the ex amination of your return. 9—1 found an expense I ovai- looked when I filled out my tax return this year. Is It too late to make this change? ^ _ No, you may still claim this expense by 1040X, Amended U. S. Individual Income Tax Return. As a general rule, you have three years from the date your return was due to claim items you forgot Copies of the form and instruc- tions for completing it may be obtained by writing to your Dis trict Director. Having A Wedding? Call Paul LemmoM Phone 487-4502 Photographer With respect to the housing I question. Federal experts were italkmg about the elimination of less the country’s financial house can be put in order. There are many in this city who believe that bold action by the Federal .government is the most essential part in achieving progress in the country. The Housing bill debate last week, however, emphasized the fala- ciousness of this viewpoint. From the beginning of the debate, it was plain that Federal action and assistance may be important, but the yare relatively powerless to meet this problem unless they are combined with such things as spending cuts, budget balancing, and a number of other actions which have been out of fashion in Washington for a tong time. Col. K. M. Saver Says: Attend the Kings Mountain Rotary Club's WHITE ELEPHANT AUCTION SALE The harsh fact of this issue is that the greatest hardship in the housing issue falls squarely upon the poor, the aged, and the mid dle income families of the nation. It is this same group which bears the heaviest burden of the in creases in the cost of living that are so apparent in everything we buy.
