spiral on the domestic scene are
the country’s two most immediate
and pressing problems. Certainly,
these problems are related as are
a whole range of issues that
spring from them. Both have pre
occupied the country’s leaders for
a lonigi time. Both leave us few al-
temativea and neither susceptable
to eaay anerwers. ’This was’ dra-
matically illustrated by the debate
last week on the 19^ Omnibus
Housing bill in the House of Rep
resentatives.

One of the important victims of
inilation has bron the nation’s
home building industry. At a time
when the need for housing is as
suming critical proportions in
many communities, mortgage cre
dit has all -but dried up. Even
when financing; for housing can
be found, home builders and home
buyers musf- face the highest in-
lerest rates in a hundred years.
The problem of “tight money’
means drastic reductions in the
nulhber of new homes being built,

nately, are often discussed as
though they were a- basic prob
lem. Actually, they are a symptom

are showing signs of success since
the economy seems to be respond
ing to restraints in spending that
have been instituted this year.

A — Withholding rates have
been adjusted to take care of the
income tax surcharge. For most
people, withholding should be
sufficient to satisfy their tax li
abilities this year.

on my case without getting in
volved with legal fees and the
like?

trict conference and present your
side of the dispute to an impar
tial third party. It will not be
necessary for you to engage legal
counsel to represent you at the
conference. It also is not neces

test to obtain a conference since
the tax involved is less than $2,-

who believe that bold action by
the Federal .government is the
most essential part in achieving
progress in the country. The
Housing bill debate last week,
however, emphasized the fala-
ciousness of this viewpoint. From
the beginning of the debate, it
was plain that Federal action and
assistance may be important, but
the yare relatively powerless to
meet this problem unless they are
combined with such things as
spending cuts, budget balancing,
and a number of other actions
which have been out of fashion in
Washington for a tong time.
