Ralei!;h — Illiteracy ia still with
us. Unlversiil literacy—the dream
tlint every naan should be able to
read — was one of the shininK
goals of the founding falhers of
this country. Almost 200 years
later that goal has not been met.
"Reading for Everybody” is the
theme of National Library Week
which will be observed April 12-
18 in North Carolina and the na
tion. Superintendent of Public In
struction Craig Phillips has en
couraged all school personnel and
students to support this year’s
observance and has noted that the
theme is particularly meaning
ful.
In Cleveland County the library
week coordinator is Mr.s. William
Oreen of Shelby.
i National figures show us that
more than a quarter of the popu-
' lation is illiterate or nearly illit
erate, he said. And about half of
the unemployed youth, ages 16-21
are functionally illiterate, he add
ed.
Dr. Phillips said that U. S. Com
missioner of Education James E.
Allen has set a goal of establish-1
ing universal litemcy in America
as a target for the seventies. By!
the end of the seventies we could |
assure that the right to read Is I
a reality for all, that no one |
leaving our schools Is without the I
skills and the desire necessary to
read to the full limits of his ca
pability, said Dr. Phillips.
In support of tlie observance of
National Library Week in North
Carolina, a committee represent
ing all sections of the state has
been appointed. Mrs. Robert W.
Scott heads the committee.

for dependency purposes? ^
A) A legally adopted child Is i
considered your child in applying;
the dependency tests. i
Q) Last year I sent in my re
turn and W-2 and you figured my
tax for me. Will you still do this
with the new form?

tax just as it has in the past if
your income is under $.5,000 and
