Eight teams will be entered in the double elimination event which will send its champion to Gainesville, Ga., for the Southeastern Regionals. Besides Kings Mountain, other teams will come from the following areas: Asheville, Newtoh, Statesville-Wilkes County. Gaston County, Charlotte, Anson County and E:ii2abe1h City-New Bern. | As defending state champion, Kings Mountain will not participate in district tournament play. The Gaston Coun-i ty district touimamcnt will be held at Costner Field in Mt. Holly with three all-star teams participating. Gastonia drew a bye in that tournament and will play the winner of ihe Mt. Holly-East Lincoln game. Gastonia will pick its all-star team from a four-team league while Mt. Holly’s team will bo from a six-team league from (iaston County. East Lincoln will also pick from a four-team loop. There will be four games here on opening day, Wednes day, July 22. Play will continue through Monday, if neces sary, but if a team goes undefeated en l oule to the champ ionship the tournament will end on Saturday. The Optimist Club, which bid for the tournament two years ago, has named Porter Griggs, a coach at Centra! Junior High School, as its tournament director. Elmer Ro.ss will serve as assistant director and Roy Pearson is the host district director. Pearson, the District Four Com missioner, will direct the district event at Mt. Holly. Jonas Bridges and Gary Stewart have been . ined as publicity chairmen and Stewart will serve as officiai scor er for the tournament. Teams will arrive in Kings Mountain on Tuesday, July 21, and will register at the Community C(*nler be tween 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. A banquet honoring the partici pating teams will bo hold that night, at which lim(‘ tour nament pairings will ho drawn. The Kings Mountain all-star loam will bo cho.son from the four loams which make up the city league: VFW. Mauney Textiles, Tiyon and Southwell Ford. Those four clubs are currently in the second half of their 12-gamo regular season schedule. King.s Mountain lost mo.st of the players which copped last yoar’.s slate title. Several of the players moved up to the legion ranks and many others were placed in the Gas tonia city league and could be playing against KM in this years tournament. TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR — Porter Griggs has been named as tournament director for the Optimist Club-sponsored state Babe Ruth baseball tournament, which will be played here the week of July 22. Griggs, a Central Junior High coach, will be assisted by Elmer Ross. First Round I Final Tonight At Henrietta King.s Mountain’s Juniors travel to Henrietta tonight for their .4rea Four, Western Division fir.st round finale and unless Post 155 wins, it will face first round champion Hickory in the open ing round of the playoffs. Hickor> nailed down first place Tuesday with a 10-3 victory over Forest City. Hickory is now 12*1 while Kings Mountain is 1-12 af ter having dropped an 8*1 deci sion to Cherryville Tuesday. Henrietta is 3-10. With a vic tory tonight, Kings Mountain could lie Mill Springs (2-11) for seventh place and get a chance t(j play second place Forest City in the playoffs. Playoff.s begin Saturday and regardless who they play, the Post 155 lads will be on the road. Teams with the best won-lo.st records get the first game in the best of five series. Post 155 will return home on Monday night and again on Wed nesday should the series go over three games. In the victory over Tryon, John ny Anderson was the winning nitcher and Steve Lancaster and Jacky Wray paced the hitting at tack. Lancaster had a pair of hits and Wray belted a two-run hom er in the eighth to snap a 2-2 tie. Jeff Carroll hurled a one-hitter as Police whipped the defending league champlorn. Steve Lancast' er gave up only four hits but was the losing pitcher. Hamrick Hurls Shelby To 4-1 Wn Over KM Tommy Hamrick, a 16-year-old righthander, hurled a two-hitter Thursday night in Shelby as the hast club defeated Kings Moun tain 4-1 in an Area Four, West ern Division contest. The victor>’ was Shelby’s second of the year over the Post 155 club. Righthander Bobby Ethridge went the distance for Post 155 and hurled cne of his best games of the year, but Shelby rallied for four runs in the' bottom of the fourth inning and that was all Hamridc needed. Three Infield singles and two errors led to the Shelby tallies off Ethridge. Except for the fourth, the KM pitcher was never in any serious trouble.
