Plonk Motor Co 260.08 1 Lot Vegetable Potential Seen Opportunities are opening up for Tar .Heol farmers tn donhle the value of their vegetable crops within the next 10 years. This Is the prediction of Dr. A. A. Banadyga, who is in charge of exten.sion horticulture program.s at North Carolina State University. "Already, North Carolina is carving itself a stake in Ameri ca's vegetable future," Banadyga said. "We now rank Hrst in fresh market tomato yields, first in pickling cucumber acreage, sec ond in sweet potato yields, sec ond in fresh snap bean acreage, ICINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD. KINGS MOUNTAIN. N. C. ' third in green popper acreage, and fourtli in fresh market cab bage acreage." 'riic American Vegetable Grow-1 er magiizine rtH-ently referr<*(i ti> the .state's growth in vegetable jrfHiuction as the "Ago ot Pio-^ rress in North Carolina.” Banadyga places the total value of the 1970 vegetable crop at a- )out $75 million, and he believes this figure can be boo.sted to at $150 imillion by 1980. | Among the .sta.:’'s more pro-j nising vegetable crops mentioned by Banadyga are: Cucumbers — The acreage of )ickling cucumbers ha.s been rrowing at a "fantastic rate.” Tlie /alu(‘ of the crop ha.s likewise ;oared from about $2 million in 19.58 to around $7J> million in 1968 I The demand for Tar Heel cukes- is good. I.ahor for picking them is generally more available here than in .some comixUing states, and the prospect for a multi-pick mechanical harvester is on the horizon. ; Swoi'l potatoe.s — North Caro- lini now produces al)out 20 per-1 cent of the total U. S. sweet po tato crop, as comi>ared to only 15 percent Uiree years ago. Yields iiav'e increased rapidly. A 3(K)- hashel (per acre) club formed in 19.59 has since been changTMl to the 700-hush(d club. A new v'arie- fv, Jew'ell, released last year by N. C. State Univer.sity, promises to be another big asset for the industry. Snap beans — About 10,(X)0 acre.s of thus crop arc now plant ed in the .state for the fresh mar- k(‘t, a slight d<vreaR(» over tht* last several years. But the pro duction of snap heaas for the proc(*ssing imarkot is increasing, and Banadyga bedieves that it can lncrea.se further. Tomatoes — Trellised tomato production in the mounlain.s has he(‘n called the "wonder child” crop of Tar Heel agriculture. This industry has grown from prac. tically nothing 10 years ago to a $5 million business la.st year. Greeniiousc tomatoes are anotiier "up and coming" industry in North Carolina. €».speciaily around the Piedmont cities. Among the other vegetable crops of importance, or of poten tial importance in North Carolina, are cabbage, carrots, p<‘pix'rs, leafy greens and Irisli pf>tati)es. <'at>bago yields have been climb ing steafliiy. Carrots are a nda- tively new crop for the stale. Th(‘y are now grown for process ing, primarily in the Tidewater area, but Banadyga believes pn>- duciion will expand to lh(? Coast al Plain and Sandhills. P(?pper.s are grown in both the Southeastern omnties and moun- tain.s. In fact, North ('arolina pro vides over two-thirds of the na tion's fre.sh ix'pp(»r need.s during the p<>ak harvest period of late July and early August. Indica tions are that the acreage of this crop will rnntinuo to expand. Banadyga .said. After declining for ye.irs, the Irish pitato crop in North Caro lina has .slabiliml Yields per acn* have incri'ased. leading Banadyga l ) believe that acreage may begin to expand once more. The NCSU .siXKaalist said the i state’s climate accounts for much , of the growth in vegetable pro- , duclk>n. The mild elimate in the i east. eoup!(?d w ith warm days and '<001 nights in the niounlains, pro- I vides a long .«easr>n for the pr>- Iduetion of quality vegetables. ! .-Mso. the traditional abundance of small farms and family labor I ha.s aided vegetable production. 1 However. Banadyga predicts more 1 mechanization. He als<j believes Page 5 that muTii of the future expan- .sion will be witli crops grown for proi'es.sing, such as green.s. snap h(‘ans. iM?pper and tomatoes.
