This year’s fair is about a week later than the fair last year, says Elbrldge Lee Weathers, fair manager. The reason for the delayi'd date is a little obscure. It appears to he due to a cyclical cause which recurs every 7 years setting the fair date back, but this is the lat est the fair has been held in its 47 year history. Another factor, the other large state fairs are also being held later this year. Cleveland’s is the largest county fair in the .south east and probably the largest county fair In the U. S. The decision regarding the date the fair will be held is jointly made between Mr. Weathers and the carnival group, Deggeller A- musoment Co. Next year the fair will proba bly rettirn to a September schedule and can arrive a.s early as Sep tember 20. according to Mr. Wea thers. But every 7 years this de layed fair date comes around, he explain.^. Regarding this cyclical phenomenon he notes that the date of the days on a 1914 cal endar he has in his office coin cide with 1970’s dates and days. The 57 acre county owned fair ground is reasonably quiet and deserted during the year except for Saturday night when auto races are held May 1 to Sept. I and the four times yearly when the barn is used for county and .slate cattle sales. (Construction is to begin on a new barn soon) Mr. Weathers reports money has been layed away for the barn each year. It the fair ceases to be an agri cultural fair, the property reverts to the county except for 7 addi tional adjoining acres owned by the fair stockholders. The fair stockholders constitute a non- firofit group. The amusement com pany pays them a certain per centage and is lucky to take away 10%, amusement officials report. The carnival people reportedly spend a lot of money in the coun ty during their brief stay, espec ially on clothes and gas for the rides and this economic boost the i-ounty receives is reportedly the reason the fair was established. It was the idea of Mr. Weathers and the late Dr. J. S. Dorton. Mr. Weathers does not divulge the total amount of money the fair grossed last year nor the per centage of profit the amusement company gets. Any profits sup port fairground improvements. James B. Strates Shows were the amusement group for many years. To get the fair underway, stock was sold at $20 a share. Only 800 shares were issued and many of the original stockholders retain their stock. The Kiwanis Club promoted the fair originally and Mr. W. K. Mauney was one of the original directors. Occasionally fair stock is sold at estate sales. Mr. Weathers says. It has never sold for less nor more than $20 and a dividend has never been issued. However, eacih sharehold- THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD, KINGS MOUNTAIN. N. C.
