Caxolinas Spodumene Belt Once
Undeveloped In Kings Mountain

The Carolinas tin spodumene:
belt was once the largest unde-;
veloped spoilumenc pegmatite
area in the Carolinas. Now de- I
veloped. it stretches the 30 miles i
from Grover to Lincolnton run- j
ning through Kings Mountain. |

The massive equipment outside!
mines 1 ton of earth in exchange
for 10 pounds of lithium. But the!
tin in the belt is not* economic-1
ally feasible to mine. |
The cost per pound of lithium j
mined is confidential. However,
betore this mine opened two years
ago the company found it cheap
er to buy all their ore (concen
trate) from Foote Mineral and
to abandon their Lincolnton mine
which may be reopened at a lat-
ei date. "Their presently mined
deposit between Cherryville and
Bc^ssemer City is expected to last
15 years at present demand.
The U. S. Government Survey
mapped the minerals of the area
many years ago but the best
maps now in USGS possession arc
those of T. L. Kesler, former K.
M. resident and former Foote
Mineral geologist, now a private
consulting geologist in Rome, Ga,.

Lithium could not affect the
area's water supplies because it’s
in a .silfcate form and requires
.strong acids to release the (‘le-

all pegmatite contains lithium. In

which is a silicafe.
