Hurricane jSeason Preparations Now that the hurricane season is upon LIS, Southern .Boll is bus>' making preparations to keep the telephone network operating in Kings Mountain in case a hurri cane or severe storm should strike the area. R. B. 'M(X)r^^ local Southern Bcdl mana^r, said today that e- mergency batteries and genera tors are maintained at all times to take over and supply electri city to Kings Mountain phone system should normal power ser vice be temporarily interrupted by storm damage^ Emergency crews aire also kept realty to deal with any damage a storm might do to telephone equipment. Hurricane season preparations are begun in May of each year when restoration t<iams are sot up In key locations in North Car olina. These groups moot and lay the groundwork for storm prep arations. Company personnel are ibrieTed on their Indlvddtial res ponsibilities, emergency supplies and materials are aissembeld and checkoi and the capabililles of emcrgenciji telephone iines and civil defense circuits are leview ed. ^ When an actual hurricane is ^p.ghted precautions aio accelera ted. Western Electric, the Bell System’s supply division, is aleii- eq to stockpile emergency re pair ecjuipment, poles and cable at strategic locations. These sup plies can be quickly transported to (‘mergency areas. Also, tele phone peop le in other aieas are n<hifieci to bt* prepait<*' to move in if they are ne<Hled. The adv'ance preparations and the close teamwork of .Southern Bell employees during past dis aster have paid_big dividon'Js. \Mien lIurriLane Hazel cut a bioad swath of destruction through the Carolinas a few years ba:k, advance planning iuip'd minimize the lime renuir- <•<1 for restoration of senhee. Res- toralicn crews consisting of more than a thousand men, skilled in repairing telephone linos an'! ca ble, rushed from Charlotte, Gas tonia and Greensbero to tele phone exchanges in stricken ar eas of the state. Help also arriv ed from Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee. Because of the Bell s: stem’s standarcli/ed equip ment, training and operating procedures, the “borrowed” iv- pairmen were able to bc'gin work immc'.dately. As a re;':'ult of teamwork and dedication, the last of the 15 ex changes isolated by Hazel had distance connections re-cs- ^■blis-hed within 30 hours after wlie stonn sti. ck. Of the 38.000 i4dephom*s silenced by the storm, over IS,000 were operating at the close of that long weekend. \Sy planning ahead, Southern Bell hop's to be able to main tain, or at least provi’.e early .restoration of, telei hone serviot ^ Ncr*h Carolina communities . There was no rea son for the gasoline tax In the last legislature, and they know It. The soft Lirink crown tax was inexcusahle, and they know Jt.” Atkins opened the meeting to questions (“something that I have conelslenlly done, but Uiat my opponent rofuses .to do”), and stated Uiat he was ft>r a change in the electoral college, but not a direct vote. He com- mentori that Republican leader ship had been re.sponsihlo for most progressive ifeieral legis lation, but that they had not sought lo publicizx» it in tiie man ner of the democrats. “Basioallv, the people in both parlM's want the best fob their nation an<i their communities.
