This column of questions and
answers on federal tax matters is
firovided by the local office of the
U. S. Internal Revenue Service and
Is published as a public servjce to
taxpayers. The column answers
questions most frequently asked
by taxpayers.
Q—Both of my children are
having orthodontic work done and
I’m going to have a big medical
exp<*nse deduction for this year.
Is there anj-way to get some kind
of tax credit for this now to help
me pay some of the bills?
A—Yes. you may be able to
have your employer reduce your
Income tax withholding based on
the larger itemized deductions
you expect. Instructions for mak
ing this change are given in
Schedule A, Form W-4, Ask your
employer for a copy.
The Tax Reform Afct of 1969 al
lows you to claim additional with
holding allowances for large es
timated deductions even when
they exceed what you claimcxl
last year. Until this change in the
law, taxpayers were limited to
the total claimed the previous
year.
Q—^The tickets I bought for a
theater benefit list an amount I
may deduct as a charitable contri
bution that is much less than
what I paid. Why?
A—The l^w limits the charita
ble deduction to the diiierence
between what would normally b€
paid for the tickets and what you
actually paid. The oimount list
ed as deductible on your tickets
reflects this.
Be sure to save ail the tickets
or other information that will es
tablish this tax deduction. Since
the full amount is not deductiole,
a check or receipt showing whai
you paid for the tickets needs to
be supplemented by additional in
formation. The deductible amount
remains unchanged even if the
tickets are not used.
Q—rm collecting Social Secur
ity benetits in addition to my
company pension. Is any of this
taxaole?
A—Social Security benefits are
not taxable. However, your com
pany pension will be taxable on
how mu-ch you contributed to its
cost.
If the plan is of a type where
your contribution is recovered
within the first three years, the
pension is tax-tree until your cost
is recovered. After that, the full
pension is taxable. Another pro
vision you should check is the
retirement inc'ome credit. It al
lows a taxpayer to reduce his in
come taxpayer to reduce his in
come tax by up to 15 percent of
his retirement income when cer
tain conditions are met.

Q—Can my son claim a with
holding exemption for himself on
his job if I still claim him?
A—Yes, your son may take an
exemption lor himself even
though you arc still entitled to
claim him. If he is not aware of
it, you should tell your son that
it may be possible for him to a-
void having income tax withheld
from his wages. If he had no tax
liability last year and expects his
earnings to be less than 51725
this year, he should file Form W-
4E with his employer to accom
plish this.
Q—I sold some farmland at a
sizeable profit. Can I reduce my
taxes by using income averaging?
A—Yes, capital gains are eligi
ble for averaging. There are new
provisions on both capital gains
and averaging so check with eith
er your local County Agent or IRS
office if you have any questions
about them when you file your re
turn next year.

MINI GARDEN BRINGS
MAXI RESULTS
•Mini gardens can bring maxi
results for the total family. That’s
the belief of program aides work
ing with the Blxpanded Nutrition
Program in iFrankliu County.
Bernice Harris, associate home
eccnomics Extension agent, says
ail program participants were
urged to have a garden to help
with the family food supply. Chil
dren were also given a small a-
mount of .seed to plant a "mini
garden.”
From one child’s garden, a
family conserved 8 quarts of corn.
Another child canned 8 pints of
tomatoes from her garedn.
CANCER BANDAGE PROJECT
Each Extension Homemakers
Club member in McDwell County
has, for many years, made cancer
bandag(‘s for needy patients.
Members ot the West Marion
Club decided to put special em
phasis on the project this year.
Each club member volunteered to
make at leas* 50 bandages.
Most members have completed
their quota, nol<»s Rachel Keisler,
home economics Extension agent.
They have rectuvod a great deal
of satisfaction from knowing that
their contribution will make
things a little easier for some
cancer patient, she added.
RESTORE FAMILY HEIRLOOMS
"I’m using my skills In restor
ing furniture to erwte warmth
and beauty in our family room,”
Mrs. James O. Motbe, a Rocking
ham County homemaker, told
Mrs. Zadie V. Jackson, home eco
nomics Extension agent.
Mrs. IMabe has anttiqued a lamp
table, smoke stand, wash stand,
and coal scuttle, the agent added.
The homemaker pointed out
that she was not interested in
intiquing furniture she buys. In
stead she uses her skills to re
store and keep pieces given her
by her parents.
