THE PEOPLE'S CONGRESSMAN Congressman Jim Broyhill believes that government is all about people — to help them accomplish things they cannot do for them selves. Through four terms in Congress Jim Broyhill has served 18 North Carolina counties. By his hard work and dedication to all the people of his District, he hos won the lasting respect and affection of tens of thousands of North Carolinians of both political parties. Two-Way Communication When the Congressional schedule permits, Jim Broyhill is in the District talking with people about notional issues and their problems with the Federal government He maintains two offices — in Gastonia and Lenoir — which provide 24-hour service seven days each week. In addition, he takes his office into virtually every community to bring Congressional service close to the people. Congressman Broyhill cares enough about the people's convictions to ask their views in public opinion surveys each year in which thousands of families express themselves. He believes that communication is a two-way street and he informs the people about events in the Nation's Capitol through his weekly Washington Report and two radio programs each week which are broadcast in all eight counties. Working with Local Officials Special District-wide conferences with mayors, county commissioners, public health officials, and welfare directors organized and sponsored by Congressman Broyhill have created better coordination of Federal, State, and local programs- These have served as models for other such conferences in North Carolina and other parts of the country- From them have come improved understanding and new facilities in many communities of the District. !rxi His Advice is Sought Congressman Jim Broyhill's advice is sought in the highest counsels in government. Jim Broyhill has served as a member of the House Re publican Policy Committee in which he has helped frame national policies for his party. He is now the Republican Regional Whip exercising an im portant leadership role among the nineteen Republican Congressmen in the six Southeastern States. It is this kind of energy and effectiveness that led the late President Eisenhower to say about Jim Broyhill several years ago, "We are fortunate to have a Congressman of such high caliber and dedication in the service of our country-" S4i
