I have a friend wlio buys wraid!
every year so that he can have a j
good supply of wood ashes. He is '
an orlganic gardener and had the!
mistaken irrea that wood ashes I
would give the magic toach to
his grape vines, vegetables and
flowers, and that no fartilizer
would be needed. While wotd'
ashes will serve a useful pur-;
pose, when properly used, they
will not be the answer to your,
fertilizer program, as we will try;
to [mint out. ■
Wood ashes contain about 1.1
pel- cent calcium carbonate la
form of lime l, about 5 to 10 per
cent potash and about 2 per
cent phosphorous. You can sec
that they do have some ferlili- i
zer value because two of the!
major plant food elements,,
phosphorous and potash (P "nd
Kl. are present; only nitrogren
(N) is absent. This element can
be easily supplied as a side dress-1
ing. The kind of wood used in the,
fireplace, whether hard or soft, i
will also affect the analysis. j
In addition to the potash, phos- [

Wood ashes should be collect
ed and stored in a dry place un
til ready to use. If they are piled
outside and exposed to the weath
er they will lose much of their
nutrient v-alue due to leacliing by
rainwater. If you do not have ‘vu-f-
flcient volume to save for soil
application, they should be spread
over the cxxmpast idle, as collect
ed.
We should consider wood ashes
as a supplement to rather .than
a substitute for the regular fer
tilizer program. This waste from
the burning process is especially
good for the root and bulb crops,
fruit trees and grapevines. It
may also be used in the annual
