He is ' an orlganic gardener and had the! mistaken irrea that wood ashes I would give the magic toach to his grape vines, vegetables and flowers, and that no fartilizer would be needed. While wotd' ashes will serve a useful pur-; pose, when properly used, they will not be the answer to your, fertilizer program, as we will try; to [mint out. ■ Wood ashes contain about 1.1 pel- cent calcium carbonate la form of lime l, about 5 to 10 per cent potash and about 2 per cent phosphorous. You can sec that they do have some ferlili- i zer value because two of the! major plant food elements,, phosphorous and potash (P "nd Kl. are present; only nitrogren (N) is absent. This element can be easily supplied as a side dress-1 ing. The kind of wood used in the, fireplace, whether hard or soft, i will also affect the analysis. j In addition to the potash, phos- [ p-horous and lime, tliere are also and Fraley Rites Are Conducted Funeral ritrsi for James Taft' Frali'y, 62. of Dallas, father of Mrs. John Patterson of Kings I Mountain, were held Sunday at i 3 I), m. from Sisk Home East ^ f'hapel in Be.s.semer City by the Rev. Wood ashes should be collect ed and stored in a dry place un til ready to use. If they are piled outside and exposed to the weath er they will lose much of their nutrient v-alue due to leacliing by rainwater. If you do not have ‘vu-f- flcient volume to save for soil application, they should be spread over the cxxmpast idle, as collect ed. We should consider wood ashes as a supplement to rather .than a substitute for the regular fer tilizer program.
