Harry Gene Fortcnhcrryt^ Sunday Nuptials Unite Terrys Two Couples Set Their Wedding Dates Temple Baptist church was the setting Sunday at high noon for the wedding of Miss Phyllis Ann Putnam and Robert Steve Terry The couple pledged vows of the double-ring ceremony before the Rev. Frank Shirley, minister of the church. The altar of the church was banked with palms, white glads and mums and light ed by Cathedral Candles in sev en-branch candelaibra. Mbs Cindy Alexander was or ganist for the program of nup tial music and Miss Judy Ray- field, cousin of the bride, was soloist. Mbs Riiyfield sang “Wliither Thou Goest,” before the ceremony and ‘‘The Wedding Prayer" as the benediction. The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a formal gown created of silk organza and imported venise lace posed over faille taffetta and styled in princess silhouette with a high neckline finished with a lace I Etiwardian Collar and short cap sleeves banded with lace scollops. Garlands of lace extended from the neckline to the hemline of the A-line skirt. Gathered hack (fullness dipped to a brief train. Her cathedral-length mantilla veil of English tulle was bordor- e<i with matching venise lace caught to a lace colot. Little 'Miss Michelle Putnam was her sister’s only attendant. She wore a floor-lengith gown of (blue and white organdy with em pire baiice and long' sleeves, ruf- tfles and ribbons extended from SOCIAL CALENDAR Saturday: 1 p.m. — C. M. Green of Earl announce the engagement of their daughter, Patricia Ann, to Vernon Edward Rice, son of ■Mr. and Mrs. I'rank Rice of Rt. 1, Grover. ■Miss Green is a rising senior at Crest High School where she plans to continue her education. She is employed by Le-Marick Beauty Salon of Gastonia. The bridegroom is the son of J. IM. Terry of Stanley and the late Mrs. Terry. He attended Hunter Huss high school of Gastonia. He is employ ed with Robert Richardson Com pany of Greenville, S. C. The newlyweds are on their wedding trip and when they re turn they will .be at home on Waco Road. Elizabeth Lall, Norman Atkins Set Wedding Date, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Richard Lail of Shelby announce the en gagement of their daughter, Elizabeth Patricia, to Norman Gene Atkins, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. She taught last year at Twelve Oaks Aca demy in Shelby. Mr. Brown holds a B. S. in Psychology from Gardner Webb college and is personnel mana ger of Chester Sportswear in Chester, South Carolina. The wedding will bo an event of August 19th at 2 p.m. in Park way Baptist church of Greens boro. Rev. and Mrs. H. S. Scruggs of Kings Mountain announce the engagement of their daughter, Debi'a Rae, to Sgt. Harry Gene Fortenberry, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Fortenberry of Route 1, Grover. The bride-elect is a 1971 grad uate of Kings Mountain and is employed by Duplex in Kings Mountain. Sgt. Fortenberry is a tSOO graduate of Kings Mountain high school and is now stationed at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Mountain Home, Idaho, assigned to the 347.th Tactical 'Fighter Wing. Member Drive Underway By Unit 155 A'merican Legion Auxiliary Unit 155 kicked off its annual Membership Drive at Thursday’s supper meeting at the American Legion building. Members and their families gathered for a picnic supiper and heard a report of delegates .to Girls State as the program for the meeting. Miss Janet Bridges, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Bridges, and Miss Lynn Blanton, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank Blan ton, delighted the group as they related their experiences at Tar Heel Girls State, a weeks session in government at the University of Nortli Carolina at Greensboro. Mrs. Robert Ruff, vice-president and co-chairman of the member ship drive with Mrs. Lillian Mitchem, outlined plans for the 1973 campaign underway this month. Two teams of members led by Mrs. Jackie Barrett, captain of Team No. 1 with Mrs. Ruff as co-captain, and Mrs. Hubert .4der- holdt, chairman of Team No. II "with Mrs. Leonard Gamble as co- captain, are leading the drive for membeirs. The day's events began with tee-off at 9:30 a.rn. The group enjoyed 18 holes of golf prior to a mid-af ternoon brunch. ♦ ♦ ♦ * TEACHERS TO WORKSHOP Mrs. Charles Baird of Kings Mountain and Mrs. Harriette Holton of Shelby are representing the coun ty schools at a special workshop this weekend (July 24- 27) for selected advisors and members for Future Homemakers of America. Mrs. Baird is FHA Advisor at Kings Mountain high school and Mrs. Holton is FHA Advisor at Shel by high school. * * * * COMINGS AND GOINGS Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Aderholt are vacationing this week at the beach. ♦ * * * Mrs. Orangrel Jolly and Miss Eliznbelh Stewart . were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Clarnnre Rick man in Canton. Davis will fly to Portland, Oregon this weekend for the annual national secretary's in stitute where she will attend sessions for a week and enroll in special classes for school secretaries. Mrs. Davis, wife of I. C. Davis, is secretary to the superintendent of Kings Mountain schools. * * BRIDE-ELECT HONORED ' 'Mrs. Angela D. Lackey of Shelby, whose wedding to Marvin Teer of Kings Mountain takes place August 5th, was honored at a luncheon and bridge party at the home of Mrs. Campbell Roberts i nShelby. Entertaining with Mrs. Roberts were her mother, Mrs. W. C. George, and her daughter, Mrs. Herbert Hickson of Gastonia. When guests arrived, lunch was served at two small tables set ,up in the living room. Each table held an arrangement of pink and white snapdragons and carnations centered with a white candle. Following lunch, bridge was played and prize winners Mrs. Barry Edwards, the high scorer, and Ms. R. B. Jenkins, the low scorer, gave their prizes to the bride-elect. The hostesses gave the bride-elect a corsage of Sweetheart roses and their wedding gifts, silver tray, an afghan and pewter vase. IT’S A BOY Mr. and Mrs. Dale Aubrey Hollifield announce the arrival of their second son, Thomas Ryan Hollifield, July I Ith, Gaston Memorial hospital. The baby weighed seven pounds, nine ounces. The new arrival has been nicknamed "Casey" by older brother, Dale Aubrey, two-and-one-half. Their mother is the former Diane McDaniel. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Glenn McDaniel and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hollifield, all of Kings Mountain. Burns of Kings Mountain, has been selected for inclusion in the Sixth .Annual Edition of Merit’s "Who’s Who Among American High Sch<»l Students.’’ A recent graduate of Kings Mountain high sch(X)l, Miss Burns is also eligible for a scholarship grant sponsored by The Merit Publishing Company Scholarship Foundation of Norlhfield, Illinois. Miss Burns will be a freshman in September at Western Carolina University where she will major in health and physical education. Students chosen for this na tional award are all junior and senior students who have demon strated leadership in academics, athletics, extra-curricular activi ties, national achievement exam inations or other allied educa tional activities.
