J Rochet Jawing On 9 Interferes With Aid , “Breaker, nine, house on fire 908 Eastwood Drive...” “...Car wreck comer of First and Llnwood Road...” “...Rescue unit needed at Moss Lake, possible drowning...” “...Vehicle being broken Into T04T parking lot...” These are four examples of traffic that may be legally reported on Channel Nine, which has bean set aside as the national emergency channel. Oiannel nine was first designated for aid to mobile units In distress by the Federal Com munications Commission (FOC) but during Ihe past five years more and more CBere have been modulating on channel nine In forming com munity watch programs. 'Ihrough a volunteer organisation such as COPE it has been proven a very effective method for protecting property. The theory Is simple; you watch your neighbor's property while he Is away and he watches your's when you sua away. Helping protect our neighbor's property, lives and lending assistance to stranded motorists la the only purpose of the Kings Mountidn COPE chapter. More examples of traffic that csui legally be transmitted on emergency channel nine are traffic accidents, fires, crimes In progress, need tor ambulance and medlcsd aid, need for wrecker or towing service. CBers may also use channel nine to obt^ such things as directions or to find an open service station. However, mobiles can and will get help faster In these matters on suiy of the other channels. Examples of traffic that should not be reported on emergency channel nine are kids running over private property, shooting fireworks and prank calls. CSers who know an emergency has been reported should not use channel nine to gather Information on the emergency. Channel nine Is not to be used by CBers for radio checks or for any non-emergency traffic. ‘ Every emergency, no matter how slight. Is Important. CBers must bear In mind a question of how serious Is the information he Is to report. Is It serious enough to tie up the national emergency channel? I We have covered a small portion of the vast uses of channel nine and we urge all CBers to study and understand Section 96 of the FOC rules and regulations, especially the portion on the use of channel nine. ^ For more Info on the use of the emergency channel we Invite CBers to bresdc toiu* or 18 tor a COPE member. We will be happy to assist In any way we can. The next regular monthly meeting of Kings S puntaln CORj^ls scheduled for 7 p. m.
