State Babe Ruth Tournament Begins Here Friday
The Senior Babe Ruth
state baseball tournament
opens Friday afternoon at
Lancaster Field with host
Kings Mountain and seven
area champions battling
for the state crown.
The Kings Mountain all
stars will play In the 8 p. m.
game each night until they
are eliminated or are the
state champions.
Action gets underway at
1 p. m. Friday with the
Area O champion
(probably Washington)
meeting the Area E champ
(probably Beaufort).
At 8 p. m., the Area F
hamp (probably
Oreenvllle) will meet the
Area B winner (Clark
Orlftlth of Charlotte), and
at 6 p. m., the Area D
champ (either Union
County or Cabarrus
County) will take on the
Area C champ (Foothills).
The Foothills team In
cludes all-stars from four
counties, Tadkln,
Alexander, Iredell and
Davie.
Kings Mountain will
meet the Area A cham
pion, either South Bun
combe County or North
Buncombe County. Those
two clubs were battling for
their area title Tuesday

nament Monday night at
Charlotte's Myers Park
High field, losing 8-3 to
East Mecklenburg In the
finals of the area tour
nament.
The locals battled their
way back through the
loser’s bracket and
whipped East Mecklen
burg 2-1 In Monday’s first
game to force a second and
deciding contest. East
Meek had put the Mounties
In the loser’s bracket
Saturday with a 8-3 vic
tory.
Kings Mountain
managed only four hits In
Monday’s championship
game while Esist Meek
went on a 10-hlt attack
against KM hurlers David
Cobb and Chris Kedter.
KM’S runs csime In the
fourth on doubles by Ray
Robinson and Cobb, and an
East Meek error.
East Meek led only 4-3
going Into the seventh
Inning, then broke the
game open with four nms
on four hits smd a pair of
KM errors.
Robinson hurled the
local entry to victory In
Monday’s opener. East
Meek’s lone run, an
unearned tally, came In
the sixth Inning after KM
had built a 3-0 lead.
KM Jumped out front
early, scoring a run In the
first on Robinson’s triple
and Daiuiy Bolin’s infield
out. KM added Its second
run in the fourth on a triple
by Vincent Haynes and an
East Meek error.
The Mounties opened
tournament action last
’Thursday night with an
easy ll-2 victory over the
Hickory all-stars.
Robinson went the route on
the mound, hurling a one-
hitter and striking out 10.
