Teenagers And The Use Of Automobiles
Along with all the other
problems of raising chil
dren, one of great concern
to parents Is how to regu
late the use of family
vehicles, once the legal age
and licensing require
ments are met.
What are the best rules
to set and how should they
be applied?
It should not be neces
sary to delve into the need
for specifically covering
the new teen driver on the
automobile Insurance
policy. Even at today's In
surance rates, no parent
should be placed In the
position of Jeopardy that no
coverage would allow. But
of course, there is much
more to teen driving than
that, and many Important
considerations that will
determine whether you
control the situation.
Law enforcement takes
a fair If not liberal attitude
toward teen drivers If . . .
—They never take part
In any form of racing on
the public highways.
—They do not drink and
drive.
—The vehicle Is not
overloaded with pas
sengers.
—No adjustments or
modifications of the
vehicle are made which
make for excessive noise.
—An off-road vehicle Is
not operated on the roads.
-Stops, starts and
traffic lane entries are

vehicle codes.
—And all other rules that
apply to all drivers are
followed.
The new teen driver
must be Impressed by the
fact that driving is a privi
lege not everyone enjdys,
and may 'be lost for fre
quent or repeated Infrac

from parents, for home
rule-breaking or, of
course, from the authori
ties.
It Is fair, even wise, to
make use of a family
vehicle contingent upon
the extent of the teen's
observance and coopera
tion In all psuent-lmposed
rules and regulations,
whether connected with
driving or not. Thus, the
teen who wants to drive
and the parent who seeks
better teen behavior In
general, quickly find a
common ground to Mhleve
both goals.
If your youngster Is
fortunate enough to have
his own car — whether he
has worked to earn It or not
— he must understand,
though the car la referred

mate responsibility lies
with the person whose
name appears on the
certificate of title, until he
becomes of age and may
legally own a vehicle.. At no
time should he be allowed

the use of an automobile Is
ccncerned, untU he la of
legal age.
The primary concern of
this department Is the
safety factor on our streets
and highways, for aU who
use them. We do not play
favorites, do not recognize
prlma donnas and we can
not tolerate lame excuses.
The teen who learns to
accept these facts of life
wUl benefit, the parents
wlU certainly rest easier,
and together we will aU
work toward better driving
and less highway ac
cidents.
If your teen becomes In
volved In a traffic violation
or accident, you will find It
wUl be to his definite ad
vantage If you display a
respectful attitude toward
the law enforcement
agency handling the prob
lem. Nothing makes a teen
more difficult to handle
than a parent ahoadng'
even the slightest
belUgerence towaird the
laws or those enforcing
them.
This Is the final article in
this column series. Many
suggestions have been
made to make parents’
handling of their
youngsters easier. Parent
readers are Invited to mall
suggestions to this depart
ment concerning teens and
such written communica
tions wUl be read and
considered for future
application, so long as
practical use csui be made
of them within the laws
that prevail.
Thanks to all of those
who have stayed with us
through the entire aeries.
