January 18, 1877 R-S Central TwinbiU Postponed Cagers At East Gaston Tonight Kings Mountain High’s basketballers return to Southwestern Conference action tonight at East Oas- tcn against a pair of Im proved Warrior teams. The KMHS at R-S Cen tral doubleheader sched uled for last Friday night was postponed due to the bad weather In Rutherford County. Both KMHS clubs are coming off tough losses to Crest. The Mountainettes, now 6-4, were upset 57-63 by the Lady Chargers last Theaday night and the Mountaineers played the undefeated and league leading Chargers a tough game before falling 68-68. IQngs Mountsdn’s girls defeated the Lady War riors their first time around but since the Gas ton County club has gotten red hot. They had won four straight conference games and six of their last seven overall until last Friday night when they fell to sec ond place Burns 47-41. The Lady Warriors’ de fense has greatly Im proved since they lost to Kings, Mountain In a pre- CSulstmas game and that defense no doubt will be geared tonight toward stopping KM’s super senior, Susan Mltchem. Defeat Crest 55-51 Jayvees Hold Top Spot Kings Mountain High’s jayvee boys basketballers maintained their share of the Southwestern Con ference lead Wednesday night at home when they edged a tough Crest team 60-61. Crest, which had been tied for first with KMHS, Bums and Shelby, fell Into fourth place. Kings Mountain’s pint- sized point guard, Darryl Friday, was the game’s top scorer with 17 points but he got plenty of help from Terry McClain with 14 points and Mike Adams with 10. “The big key for us,’’ noted Coach Dennis Dukes, “was our play off the boards.’’ Thomas McClain grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds and Terry Me- Claln added eight. “We had well executed offensive patterns agalnet a tough Crest man to man defense,’’ added Dukes. “We got great team hustle, phis a super game from our substitutes.’’ The game was close all the way. Crest leading by 0-6 after the first period and 24-22 at Intermission and the Little Moun taineers going out front 40- 36 heading Into the fourth period. The Little Chargers grabbed a two-point edge early In the fourth quarter but KMHS came right back to take the lead. North Gaston’s senior sensation, Nancy Scoggins, Is the league’s top scorer with a 26 point per game average and she’s already topped the 1,(XI0 point mark In career scoring. She currently has 884 points for her four-year career and If she continues at her prasent rate of scoring she could beccxne the school’s all-time scoring leader. Mltchem la getting a lot of scoring help from a pair of talented Juniors. Qayla Robert is scoring 10.1 polnta per game and Judy Henderson Is hitting 8.8 and is leading the club in rebounding. Kings Mountain’s boys are hoping the Improve ment they showed in the Ck«st game last ’Tuesday nlg^t will carry over Into the remainder of the season. The Mountaineers are currently 3-7 In con ference play and 8-8 overall and need to turn their season aroimd. To date, they’ve been a low-scoring team and have only two players hitting In double figures. Senior Wil liam Thompson Is the point leader with 168 points and a 18.6 average. Sophomore Vernon Bell has scored 101 points for a 10.1 average. He has played In only 10 games, missing the Cleveland County Tlpoff Tournament because of a knee Injury. Hie biggest thing the Mountaineers have going for them at present Is youth. Coach John Blalock loses only two players off his current team, Thompson and Bobby Odkims. The KMHS clubs return home on Friday night to host Burns In a twInUU beglidngat'3':80knd' both local teams will be looking for revenge. In an earlier SWC doubleheader, the Bums clubs literally ran the Mountaineers out of Fallston, but the Moun taineers came back to give the Bulldogs all they could handle in the Tlpoff Tournament before falling by a point. In the SWC race, the North Gaston glris and Crest boys continue to sail along with unbeaten records and aren’t showing any signs of letting up. Most clubs. Including Kings Mountain, will be trying to peak In the South- western Conference tournament as the SWC sends both its regular sea son and tournament win ners to the Western N. C.
