‘^eaday, Febimry U, UTI-BailBOB-HEBALD-Pace s KMHS Junior Varsity Girls Cagers SWC Co-Champions With 10-2 Record iOngs Mountain Hlgh’a jayvM glili basketbaUers defeated Bait Rutherford 88- 17 Thunday to clinch a ihare of the Souttiwestern Cknference championship. The victory ended the Little Mountalnettes' season. Coach Joe Rountree’s ladles finished with a 10-3 record, same as R-8 Central. It was no contest Thursday at Bast as the KM ladles ran to a IB-l first quarter lead, and toyed with the Lady Cavaliers after that. Coach Rountree began clearing Ids bench early In the second period. “I was real nervous about this game," rwted Rountree, "because Bast Rutherford almost beat R- 8 Central last week. But our girls just went out there and beat them playing good fundamental baaketbaU.” BUsabeth McOUl led the KM scoring 10 polnU and Robin McSwaln and Sabra Bristol added eight each. "I’m no* trying to run down Bast,” said Roun tree, "but that was a boring game to watch. Our girls could have gone up there without a coach and beat them. We even put people In different positions to make It In teresting.” The Mountalnettes led by 36-e at halftime and 82-B after three quarters. The Little Mountalnettes became the first KMHS baaketbaU team to win a conference championship since toao-TO when the varsity boys team won the SWC tlUe with an unbeaten record. "Our success this year was due to the fact that we played exceUent defense and played weU together as a team," noted Roun tree. "Needless to say, I er^oyed my first year of coaching.” ’Ihe lone defeats for the KM ladles came In first round play, when they dropped road games to Shelby and Bums. They avenged both of thoee losses recently In the KMHS gym, beating both county rivals without the help of one of their top scorers and rebounders, Barbara McClain, who sat out the second half with an Injury. Probably KM’s most satisfying win came Wednesday at home when the Mountalnettes bombed Shelby 87-36 In a game that wasn’t as close as the final score Indicated. Coach Rountree, a Shelby graduate, began clesuing his bench early In the second period after run ning up a 14-4 first quarter lead. The Mountalnettes were out front 80-13 at In termission and 46-18 after three periods. BUsabeth McOUl almoet single-handedly scored as many points as the entire Shelby club. She ripped the nets for a 38 points, most of any KMHS player this season. Cheryl Leach and Sabra Bristol added nine points apiece and Annette Lit tlejohn scored eight. Shelby Coach Caroline Dedmon was ejected from the game In the second half after drawing three straight technical ibuls. McOUl shot six technical free throws, hitting four. Kings Mountain’s boys, who led the SWC much of the season, dropped their final two games to end their season with a 9-6 record. Bums and Shelby finished as co-champlons with 11-8 records. The Little Mountaineers fell to Shelby Wednesday, 48-86, and lost to East Rutherford Thursday 46- 44. Darryl Friday was the high scorer for KM In both games, hitting 11 against Shelby and 18 against East. KM led 84-83 going Into the fourth quarter against the CavaUers but the home team came back to win It. I I CELEBRATING 23 YEARS V I OF GROCERY SERVICE TO ALL OF kl' OUR FINE CUSTOMERS... Gk>rdon Second In Association Kings Mountain High’s heavyweight, David Gordon, came In second place In the Western N. C. High Schools Actlvltlea Association tournament last week In SaUsbury, but can take some pride In ttie fact that he won tha association champlonah^ for Concord IBgh School. Gordon, KM’a 6-11, 3t0. pounder, was matched In the heavyweight finals against 6-6, 800-pound BUI Cooper of Watauga. Gordon suffered a groin Injury with 32 seconds left In the match and It was thought Cooper might be awarded the victory on a default, which would have given him 16 team polnta. But Gordon came up off the mat to flnlah the match and lost by a 10-6 declelon. The decision gave Watauga only 14 team points and they finished one-point ahy of Ooncwd In the team standlnga. "Gordon was badly dlaappolnted,’’ noted KMHS Coach Bo Goforth, "because he felt Uke he could have beaten Cooper. TTie only big difference In the two was Cooper’e size. "But David has nothing to be ashamed of,” he went on. "He gave a good showing and he’s only the second wrestler ever from Kings Mountain to reach the association finale.” The other KMHS wrestler to make the finale was Alfred Aah, who won the tttte tour yean ago. Aah U now a member of the Appalachian wrestling team. Gordon won tour mat ches, two by pins, befwe reaching the finals against Ooc^er. The loss to Cooper was the only one suffered by Gordon this season. Gordon opened the tournament Thursday with apln over BUl EUla of West IredeU and he came back In the second round with a pin or Paul Pierce of South over IredeU. He won a 18-7 dedalon over seventh seeded Logan Fufe of Trinity In the third round and took a 16-7 decision over rtxth seeded Leon Galttier tai the aeml- flnali. Gordon ftnlahed with 33 of Kings Mountain’s 36 team polnta. KM’a other four team polnta were won by 166- pound Norman PhlUlps, DAVID GORDON who pinned BIU Bridges of Oeat In the (gening round. No other KMHS wrestlers won, but several gave good showings against some of the top- seeded wreatlers. Oolg BeU, KM’s 100- pounder, lost out to Coffey of Watauga In the opening round and Coffeey went on to win the aoioctatlon title. Sammy BeU, 106, lost to Poore of West Rowan; Tim Mltchem, 113, lost to Fesperman of Trinity; Lawyer Lewis, 136, was pbmed by eighth-seeded Lefeveri of Hudeon; Pander SherrUl, 183, lost by default to Foust of South Point when he re-lnjured his back; Robert Ingram, 188, lost to third seeded Richie of Ooncord, who went on to finish second; Tim Spicer, 186, lost a narrow 14-18 decision to VonAuken of MooresvUle; and Bruce Valentine, 106, dropped a narrow decision to Roger Deals of North Gaston. Tim Speight, a 166- pounder from Albemarle and the brother of Kings Mountain Junior High coach Joe Speight, won the title In his weight division. The outstanding wrestlers, as voted on by the partlctpatlng, coaches, were Sonny Morton of South IredeU and Bruce Moody of Lexington. "We’re looking forward to next year," said Cbach Goforth, "when we’U have everybody back except Tim Spicer. Also, we’U have seven coming up from the junior high school team, which had a real good eeason this year. So our program le really looking up.”
