C. 88086 February 10, 17, 84 k March $ Ron Franks will serve as 1077 Kings Mountain Chairman of the First Annual Door-to-Door Campaign fcr the Kidney Foundation of North Carolina. The Campaign will be conducted In Kings Mountain during the weekend of March 38-37. The local Campaign la part at a statewide Campaign being conducted in 50 towns In North Carolina. Programs served by the Kidney Foundation of North Carolina Include public education, professional education, the Organ Donor Program, research and patient services. Franks, as Chairman of ttie local campaign, will begin recruiting 10 other Captains to assist In recruiting 08 marchers for die Campaign. He announced that a conununlty goal of $478 has been set fw the '77 Kidney Foundation Campaign for Kings Mountain. Keever, 10, who had decided to take a different route down the mountain from the eight young people who had spent the day hiking the mountains, taking pictures and having fun. The two Injured youths were going to climb down the rocks while the rest of the group went down the path. "R was real narrow,” according to Keever. “Steve was right beside me. The next minute I looked around and he was going down. He fell 80 to 60 feet off a ledge. He never touched nothing on the way down. Ifls whtde body hit on the rocks at the brttom and was knocked uncon scious Immediately.” Young Keever said he started down to help and caught his foot between a tree and rock and fell about 10 to 13 feet and rolled the rest of the way to where his friend was. According to Keever, "David’s back was hurt and the rest of the group rushed over to the ledge and looked down at their Injured friends. Eddie Stokes, 10, climbed around the long way and tried to give first aid and everybody threw their coats down and Eddie covered him up and built a fire to keep him warm.” Barry Holshouser ran all the way down the moun tain to get help and Paul Jemlgan built a fire at the top of the ledge to warm himself and the girls. Tenny Nixon, Rosanna Griffin and Millie Pfaff. When Barry got to the cars, he found that aU three had been broken Into and robbed of tape players, speakers, and clothes. He rushed to a nearby service station and phoned for help* The rescue teams were on the mountains In minutes along with a local doctor. Dr. Frank Slncox. Steve Harkey was transferred from Kings Mountain Hospital to Charlotte Memorial Hospital where his con dition Is listed as satisfactory. David Keever was treated at Kings Mountain Hospital and released.
