Page lOA-MIRROR HERALD-ThurwIay, March S, 1*77 Senate Recluces The Number Of Committees With the beginning ot the two-year session of the 9Sth Oongress, the Senate has moved to reduce the num ber of its committees, the purpose being to stream line its organization in the Interest of efficiency. These changes, plus a number of changes in the membership, have altered my situation and I believe North Carolina’s interests have been served in the process. Because of resignations or losses at the polls, I have jumped 18 places in seniority, which is quite different from my status two years ago when I entered as a new member and was near the bottom of the seniority list. The leadership has recognized this, and has made changes in my com mittee assignments which I believe will allow me to serve our state more ef fectively. While I enjoyed my service on Public Works, I believe that Armed Services is more Important, espe cially now when the country is trying to decide what sort of emphasis we are to place on our national defense. others are integral parts not only of the defense picture, but also of our state’s economy. I shall continue my serv ice on the Oommitttee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affsilrs. This, too, is one of the key committees, as it is concerned directly with the nation’s economy and has general oversight of financial institutions. While all subcommittees have not been chosen, I was named chsdrman of a new subcommittee on Rural Housing, which I feel is going to be an active unit. It will have oversight of the Farmers Home Ad ministration. I will continue to serve on the Commltttee on Intelligence. The In telligence Committee will monitor the activities of the Central Intelligence Agency, the Federal Bijreau of Investigation and similar groups. H<^fUlly, such things as the improper invasion of individual rl^ts and other Illegal activities that were uncovered last year are finished. ITie fourth assignment I have been given is membership on the Senate Ethics Committee, a small five-member group which will deal with any charges of misconduct on the part of individual senators, should any such incidents The nation now spends practically one-third of its annual budget on defense, and the Armed Services Committee has a large voice in saying just how that money shall be allocated. This fact makes the committee one of the most Important in the Congress. Also, I think that the committee is extremely Important to North Caro lina, which has a number of large military Installa tions.
