Rescuers Host Benefit
ElARL — The Earl Gar
den Club met at the home
of Mrs. Warren Stamea
Monday night.
Members and vlaltorB
were welcomed by Mrs.
Starnes, president. In
cluding Mrs. Ed Cham
pion, Mrs. C. Q. Lavender,
Mrs. Johnny Lavender and
Mrs. Hagen Barrett.
Devotions were given by
Mrs. Steve Johnson.
Mrs. Morris Runyans
gave a report cm the club's
project of waste paper,
saying that a central place
hsa been set up In town for
collecting the waste paper.
After a short business
session, the plant for the
month to be studied, varie
gated and plain Urlope,
were passed around and
discussed by members.
Also, a six bloom
Amaryllis was passed
around and each member
told how she cared for such
a plant In planting and
feeding It.
Mrs. John T. Moore, Jr.
of High Point gave the
program on trees. She
started by telling the his
tory of Artmr Day, saying,
"Long before Arbor Day
was celebrated In the U. S.
A., there hsul been Tree
planting customs In other
parts of the world. The
man who must be given the
honor of promoting the
first formal observance of

members met one week
earlier than usual, on
Wednesday, March 3, to go
as a group to the Southern
Living Show In Charlotte.
Members were able to
formulate Ideas for their
the displays of plants and
flowers. Other Items of
Interest were the hsuid-
crafts and beautifully
furnished rooms of fur
niture.
Before leaving, each
member was given a soil
tsrtliig kit from WBT.

newspaperman, who
migrated from Detroit In
18M and found there only
open prairies where the
wind swept along unhin

vastating results. In 188S
through his Influence,
April 22 was set aside In
Nebraska as a legal
holiday called Arbor Day.
Within 16 years a total of
600 mUUon trees had been
planted and 100,000 acres
of waterlands had been
turned Into forested land.
Miss Marie Davis gave
Instructions on how to
grow the house plant,
kalanchoes, which re
sembles Christmas Cac
tus.
“Horticulture Quiz" was
given to members.
Mrs. Jeff Champion will
be hostess to the next
meeting.

Starnes In serving refresh
ments.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles F.
Mauney entertained at a
dinner party at their home
on Roxford Road Friday
evening honoring newly
weds Mr. and Mrs. Kemp
Mauney.
The 18 guests were
members of the two
families.
Tables were set up tat the
living room smd dining
room and were overlaid
with handmade lace cloths
accented with arrange
ments of winter greenery
and candles.
Assisting In serving and
entertaining were the
daughters of the host
couples, Carla, Leigh and
Kakl Mauney.

Mr. and Mrs. Barry Robinson, of
Oak Grove Community, announce
the arrival of their third son, Joshua
Todd Robinson, Feb. 38, Cleveland
Memorial Hospital. The baby
weighed five pounds, six ounces.
Grandparents are Mrs. Marjle
Dellinger of Kings Mountain and
Thomas E. Robinson of Gastonia.
Other members (rf the family are
Chris Robinson, age six, and Chad
Robinson, age four,
Mrs. Robinson Is the former Doris
Dellinger of Kings Mountain.
