(EDITOR’S NOTE -
The Rev. Russell Fitts
is pastor of Bethlehem
Baptist Church and
recently spent a week
in Harrogate, Tenn.,
scene at devastating
rains and flooding.)
By REV. RUSSELL FITTS
Special To Mirror-Herald
As I drove to Harrogate,
Tenn. on Sat., Apr. 9 two
things occupied my
thoughts; the unfamiliar
road and the bank robbery
and murders in Kodak,
Tenn.
The latter was tragic.
Four persons had been
farced to lie face down on
the floor in the bank and
they were executed gang
land style. One victim 11
ved for two days after the
shootings.
But as I drove nearer my
destination I thought more
about the road I traveled.
There were up to four foot
drops where the edge of the
highway had disappeared.
The rains In that area had
been terrible.
The people in Harrogate
were not thinking about the
murders In Kodak because
they had been pre
occupied with their own
well-being. They had Just
gone through the worst
flooding in the history of
the county.
On Easter Sunday as I
began conducting revived
services at Harrogate
B<q>tl8t Church, I was told
no me remembers when so
many people had gathered
there for an Easter serv
ice.
I did not notice any ten
sion among the people and
I learned they are friendly
and tough. They smile and
go back to rebuilding their
homes. The pastor of the
church announced that any
help the people could give
the flood victims could be
left at the local bank.
Just a few miles north of
Harrogate the Army
erected tents and brought
in supplies of food and
clothing to give relief to the
hundreds of persons left
homeless by the water and
mud. The Army was also
making arrangements for
housing for the people
after the troops moved out,
until the homeowners
could clean the deep mud
from their own homes —
the ones left standing.
Bridge Benefit Tonight
At KM Woman’s Oub
The floods the people
have learned to live with,
but not the senseless
killings over in Kodak. I
also learned the new
sheriff of Claiborne County
is now wearing a gun for
the first time. The Kodak
murders and a shooting
attack on one of his depu
ties has convinced him to
wear the gun.
In my room at the
Wilderness Inn, which is
situated on the mountain
side, I could look out over
some of the most beautiful
country I have ever seen.
It caused me to think that
church, floods, death and
beautiful scenery is all a
part of dally life and It will
go on until ....
