Lowrence (Helen) Logan of Kings Mountain won second prize for her poem, “Photograph of Vera,” In the North Carolina Poetry Society's Contests tor 1977. Hie Kings Mountain woman’s poem will be published In "Award- Winning Poems 1977,” an annual publication of the N. C. Poetry Society. Helen Logan has loved to write poetry tor a number of years as a hobby. Mrs. Logw attended the Awards Day luncheon of the Society May 7th at Chapel IBU. Plrst, second and third place winners received monetary awards as well as cer tificates. A new category added this year was the Zoe Kincaid Brockman Memorial Book Award In memory of Mrs. Brockman, first president of the N. C. Poetry Society founded In 1983 and women's editor of the Oastonla Oazette for a number of years. Hie $100 award, plus a silver bowl to be retained for one year, was presented to John Moses Pipkin of Oreensboro for his book of poetry published last year on the title "Half After Love.” -oOo- 8TCDENT8 HONORED Fiber Industries honored two local 1 scholarship winners — Chris Holmes of Kings Mountain and Joyce Oreen of Shelby, at a luncheon at the plant Hiuraday. Fiber Plant Manager Eugene LeGrand presented gifts to both young people who are both high school seniors. Holmes Is son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Holmes of Kings Moun tain and won the coveted National Merit Scholarship. Miss Oreene received the Drefus Special Scholarship.
