The first - time winners edged Stoney and Chicken by one shot. Plonk and Lyle finished third at 188. Ihe victory by Nelsler and Patton, the nephew of former U. S. Amateur champion Billy Joe Patton cf Morganton, marked the first time anyone other than John Howae and Ronnie Jackson Blanton Robert Richard Stroup or Mickey Powers and Ray Adams had won the tourney. Howse and his new playing partner, Don Teague of Shelby, had the best round of the tournament, a closing 66 on Sunday. But an opening day 71 put them In the first flight and they won that title with a score that matched Nelsler and Patton’s winning score. Nelsler and Patton shot a two-under-par 70 Sunday to break a Uvee- way tie with Jackson and Blanton and Darrell Austin and Del Morrow. All three teams opened with 66. Jaekaon and Blanton, former manager of Woodbrldge Country Club here, missed a golden opportunity to win the title Sunday when Jackson drove the S87-yurd 18th green, but three putted for a par. Jerry Ross and Joe Costner, with 189, finished second In the first fQght and Darrell Austin and Jud Spargo shot a 143 to finish third. Second flight honors went to John Gamble and Randy Hartsoe with 148. Ouy Trout and Lee Ashe fired a 144 for second place and Walt Harmon and John Gold took third with a 146. Delk Halgler and Damll Fofber, a pair of Kings Mountain High golfers, won third fU^t honors with a 163. Ray Holmes and George Brant were second at 168 and Gene ’Timms and Hubert McGinnis third at 164. Hope Plastics of Gastonia won the double elimination event, defeating Kurfees Plaint of Gastcnla 13-3 In the title game. Kings Mountain lost out In the semi-finals to Kurfees, 6-3. Dee Carter was the winning pitcher and Jerry Jackson took the loss. Barron Wilson led KM at the pUte with a triple. In earlier games, KM defeated Kurfees 8-6 and lost to Hope Plastics m.
