HUltoppera to upset South Point
last fall.
Rtm Hendrix, the R-S coach,
says he's hoping the HUltoppers
will start off this SWC season the
same way they aided last
year’s.
"If we play the type of ball we
played against South Point last
year, then we can play with
anybody In the conference,’’ he
says.
One of Morris’s favorite
targets win probably be tight
and Eddie Searcy, a returning
starter.
'The KMHS coaches have been
weU pleased writh their team In
pre-seascn drUls and In last
week’s scrimmage with 4-A
Olympic High School. However,
several players are nursing
some nagging Injuries and are
doubtful starters for Friday
night
One of those players Is
linebacker Scott Ellis, who has
been bothered for several
months wdth pulled muscles In
his back. The offier starting
linebacker, Bruce Valentine, has
been bothered with a toe Injury
but should start.
Others who have experienced
Injuries In the last week Include
end Dennis Putnam and guards
Walter Floyd and Richard Van
Djdce. Jones is hopeful all will be
able to play even If they can’t
start.
The KMHS offense will Include
Rennie Wllsoi and either Put
nam or TSrry McClain at ends,
David Gordon and TTm Seay at
tackles, Kelly Land and Alan
Putnam at guards, Valentine at
center, Jim Hall at quarterback,
Kenny Bell and Jody Deaton at
halfbacks and Dennis Owens or
David Ray Robinson at fullback.
Gordon, Valentine, Land,
Putnam, McOaln and BeU are
returning starters. Robinson and
Owens alternated at fullback and
Hall started two games- at
quarterback.
Defensively, the Mountaineer
lineup will Include McClain and
Steve Laughter at ends, Gordon
at tackle. Land and either Chris
Bumgardner or Norman Phlll4>s
at guards, Robinson or Stan
Scruggs at rover, Valentine and
either Ellis or Kale Gdns at
linebacker, Bryon White and
Andy Loftin at the comers and
Steve Boggan at safety.
If Ellis starts at linebacker,
the defense will be the same as
lakt year except at cne guard,
one comer and safety.
KM’S kicking game will be In
good shape with Robinson doing
the placeklcklng and Boggan and
Danny Bolin handling the
punting chorea.
Friday’s contest will be the
first KM-R-S Central meeting
since 1^1 when the Moun
taineers won a 26-6 dedslon on
HUltopper soil. ’Ihe two clubs
quit {daylng each other the next
year when several new teams
entered the SWC.
