Kings Mountain High School will be represented
by three players In the college football ranks this
fail.
Soi^omore defensive back Chris Johnson
returns for his second season at Gardner-Webb
and la being heavily counted upcm by Coach Oval
Jaynes, whose club la one of the pre-season
favorites In the SAC-8 Conference.
Freshman Richard Rosa, who originally signed
with Gardner-Webb, could break the starting unit
at Wofford, which la playing under new coach
Buddy Sasser. Ross played halfback at KMHS but
wlU probably be used as a wide receiver by the
Terriers. .
Tenneesee Tech Is counting on safety William
Thompson, who has drawn a lot of praise from
Coach Don Wade in pre-season drills.
There’s a strange story surrounding ’Thompson’s
appearance on the Tech campus In Cookesville,
Thnn.
"We tried to sign him to a grant-ln-ald during
the recruiting season,’’ Wade said, "but he turned
us down. The next thing I knew he showed up here
for practice. He’s paying his own way."
The Golden Eagles open their season on Sep
tember 10 against Western Carolina. Ironically,
one of Thompeon’s high school coaches was Dan
Brooks, a former player and coach with the
Catamounts.
Another Kings Mountain resident, but one who
did not play at Kings Mountain High, is being
counted on to catch a lot of passes for Lenoir
Rhyne’s Bears this fall.
Steve Gardner, a 212 pound sophomore, was
moved to tight end from quarterback during LR’s
spring drills. He’s a former All-Conference
standout at Bums High School.
-oOo-
Dennls Dukes, offensive backfleld coach at
KMHS, will be In an unenviable position Friday
night when the Mountaineers open Southwestern
Conference play at R-S Central.
Dukes Is a native of Rutherfordton and was an
All-Conference halfback tor the HlUtoppers In the
late 60’s and 1970. He went on to become the
leading rusher at Gardner-Webb for four seasons
before Joining the faculty at KMHS.
Friday will mark the first time KMHS has
played R-S since 1971 and the first time Dukes has
ever pulled agsdnst his alma mater.
-oOo-
KMHS head coach Bobby Jones went to Chase
last week to kill two birds with one stone. He
scouted both Chase and Ashbrook, two clubs the
Mountaineers will be playing In the coming two
weeks.
like everybody else, Jones ccune away stunned
that the Trojsms completely demolished Ash
brook, 82-14.
"They’re awesome,” Jones said of the Trojans.
"They’re as good as any high school team I’ve
ever seen. Ashbrook didn’t look that bad. They
Just weren’t a match for Chase.’’
Chase has won at least a share of the SWC title
the past two seasons and the Trojans are being
picked as one of the leading contenders again this
year.
-oOo-
It’s that time again ... time to make our annual
predictions of the upcoming SWC race, and to
begin our weekly pickin’ the winners of area
games.
As far as the SWC race Is concerned, there's not
much that can be added to what’s already been
said. It’s going to be one of the best races ever
with any one of several teams capable of winning
the trophy.
So, to get right In to the predictions, we’re
calling it like this:
1 — Kings Mountain
3— Chase
8 — Shelby
4— South Point
5 — Crest
6 — East Rutherford
7 — East Gastcn
8 — R-S Central
9 — North Gaston
10 — Bums
And, now, quickly scanning over the first week
of action, we see Kings Mountain defeating R-S
Central 21-0, South Pdnt over Askbrook 21-7,
Shelby over Hunter Huss 14-10 East Gaston over
East Lincoln 37-30, South Mecklenburg over North
Gaston 38-0, Bessemer City over Gastron Day 18-
6, CherryvUle over Bums 30-18, East Carolina
ovsr N. C. Stats 84-81, South Carolina ovsr Ap
palachian 38-7 and Wsatem Carolina over
Jacksonville State 37-24.

season.
The Jayvees have
looked sharp in pre
season drills and should
be set tor a winning
season. At present,
there are 22 players on
the team, all
sophomores.
Jeff Clonlnger, who
quarterbacked KM
Junior High last fall,
will lead the club Into
action. He’s 6-9 and 104
pounds and Is a good
option quarterback and
a good passer.
Wade Harrington and
Tim Leach will also be
called on for a lot of
quarterback play.
The Little Moun
taineers are strong In
the running game with
tailback Avery Smith
leading the way. He
looked especially sharp
