this time the city was after bigger game — a manhole
about the else of a one-room i4>artment for a dwarf.
■Die digging took place on S. Piedmont Ave. In front of
the Mirror-Herald buUdlng and required a hole about
IS-deet deep and wide enough to lose a U-Haul truck In.
In the above photos we see Walter OlUs, street supt.,
guiding the concrete base for the new manhole Into the
hole. When the base was In place the crane operator
lifted OUls and another city employe out of the hole,
then lowered the concrete walls tor the manhole, then
the top.
Below the Herald office, at the driveway entrance to
Sample Yardage, another hole was dug and the same
action repeated.
The Job Is a continuation of one started a couple of
years ago, the Installation of conduits and manhole for
underground electrical wiring. This Job will complete
the loop from the municipal parking lota oft Piedmont,
Include the new governmental services facilities
building, then loopback around Cherokee St. to tie back
lido the parking area system.
In aboutthree months the city crews will return to dig
up the roads again, this time to Install the conduit pipe
to carry the electrical lines.

Following dlscusdon In oxecuttve
session Monday the Cleveland
County Oommlaaloners voted to
purchaw 2.6186 acres adjacent to
Kings Mountain Hospital.
The county agreed to pay $40,000
fbr ttie property, lew donations that
may be offered, for future expansion
of the hotyltal.
The property has frontage on
Styes and N. Shns Sts. and Is owned
by Home Savings and Loan Associa
tion. On another a<)Jacent lot Home
plane to construct a new building.
That site Is 1.9 acres.
In other action the board approved
a request from Thomas W. Harper
that gravw be removed from an old
fhmlly cemetery adjacent to the
Kings Mountain Country Club.
Harper suggested the graves be
moved to another appropriate site.
The request was made In view that
no living direct descendants of those
burled In the eight plots In the old
cemetery have been found and that
the location of the cemetery ham
pers any possible future develop
ments of the property.
Harper told the board that the
cemetery Is iwt kept iq> and that the
graves have been desecrated
me years by vandals.

fashion" hats with large, summery

pointed vice-chairman of the city's
newly-organized Emergency
Operations Committee Wednesday

The committee approved
unanimously draft of an Operation
PUui based on the possibility of a
train derailment In or about the City
of Kings Mountain with the
possibility of evacuating civilian
personnel from the areas Involved.
The plan will be updated as to the
activity and actions of the units
assigned, said Chairman Humes
Houston, city commissioner from
District Two.
Cbmm. Houston pointed out that
the greatest problem would be the
evacuation of personnel and
combating toxic agents If Involved In
a derailment.

L. B. (Josh) Hlimant, county

the county disaster plan to be used In
conjunction with the overall plan.
Senator J. OUe Harris will obtain
lirformatlan as to the location of
radioactive detection equipment on
the state level that would be
avsdlable If needed. The Information
will come from the office of David L.
Britt, of the N. C. SUte Civil
Preparedness Offices.
First Sgt. aiau-les E. Wilson of the
National Guard, prepared suid sub
mitted to the committee a chsdn of
command starting from a city
request (or use of National Guard
assistance through all the agencies
to the Governor and back to the local
level.
Police Chief Jackie Barrett and
Fire Chief Gene Tignor were asked
to divide the city Into areas and set
up a traffic flow diagram In case of
evacuation.
Mrs. Mary Tiiruns will obtsiln a
Red Cross Disaster Plan.

station "will stay on the air durtyg
any emergency situation.”

Airport Meeting Tonight
Tile general public Is Invited to
attend a meeting at the Kings
Mountain Airport Committee
tonight at 7:80 at city haU.
A representative of the FAA will
be on hand to talk about the city's
possibilities of getting an alirort
facility to serve business, lixlustry
and the private pilot.
The Interest shown by citizens at
tonight's meeting could go a long
way toward making an airport a
reality (or the city, according to
Mayor John Moss.
The airport committee. Includes
Dr. Frank Slncox, Tommy Bridges,
J. C. Bridges, James Childers,
Ocn'bet Nicholson and BUI Grissom.
Band Concert Tonight
Barnes Auditorium will rock
tonight with the sound of band
music.
Beginning at 8 p. m. there Is a free
concert featuring the Kings
Moisitaln Junior High Ninth Grade
Band, under the direction of
Christopher Cole, and the Senior
High Blazer Band, under the
direction of Donald Deal.
On Feb. 96 the ninth grade en
semble participated In state com
petition at Kannapolis and won a
Superior rating. Next Friday (Mar.
17) the Blazer Band wlU cwnpete In
state (estival competition In
Salisbury.
The program tonight wL. consist
of the selections prepared for the
state festivals by both bands.
