Helen Belcher Conversation With Young Actress Kim Cattrcill Praises TV Special By TOM McIntyre Editor, Mirror-Herald John Jakes has written seven of his promised eight novels dealing with the Kent Family. The original novel In the Bicentennial series Is entitled "The Bastard.” Now “The Bastard,” or “The Kent Family Chronicles,” as It Is being called In many areas, has been made Into a two-part, four-part movie for tele vision. The movie Is the second Operation Prime Time offering from MCA-TV. OPT is the name given in'ojects produced for TV on a market-by-market deal and not under the ban ner of either of the TV net works. WBTV, a CBS-TV affili ate, plans to air the two- pe.rter Thursday and BYl- day. May 25-26 from 9-11 p. m. Across the country the film Is being telecast mainly on Independent sta tions. The first Operation Prime Time offering (1977) was a three-parter based on Taylor Caldwell's novel, “Testimony of Two Men.'' As ''Testimony” did, “The Bastard” also boasts of a large cast — many well-known actors and actresses and sdmost as many newcomers. One of the newcomers Is fQm Cattrall. Bom In Loverpool, England and raised In Canada, Kim portrays Aime Ware, an American, and the love Interest of young Philip Kent. Kent Is the American name adopted by the Illegitimate son of an English nobleman who escapes to America with a price on his head during Revolutionary times. In America Kent meets, falls In love with and weds Atme Ware. She Is the daughter of one of the Revolutionary leaders. During a phone In terview, Kim Cattrall talked about her role, the show and of her own career aspirations. “I was originally tested for another role In the film,” Ms. CattraU said. "That of an aristocratic English woman named Alicia. The producers felt I was not Tight for the role, which eventually went to Olivia Hussey, but that I might be right for the Atme Ware role. “I was more right for the role of Aime,” she con tinued. “I am physically strong and In good condi tion. Atme Ware Is like that. She Is Independent and strong-willed. I was thrilled to get the part because Atme Is the love Interest of the lead charac ter.” It Is the type of role, “An Important role In an Im portant television film,” Ms. Cattrall said she would not be considered for In a network show. She said she Is an unknown quantity to the networks even though she has appeared In "The Hardy Boys,” “The Class of '65,“ “Switch,” “Logan's Run” and a “Oolumbo” episode. She has also completed one movie role in “Rosebud.” “The networks have what they call a Q Rating fbr actors and actresses,” she said. “That has something to do with audience recognition. I sim rut rated very high under this system because I am a relative newcomer to the scene. For this reason If ‘"nie Bastard” had been done by one of the net works I would never have been considered for such an Important role." Ms. Cattrall's first ac ting break came In the theatrical film ‘ ‘Rosebud.' ‘ She said, “One day I was tiding the subway to work and the next I was In a limousine tiding to the set of “Rosebud.” We spent four months on that film.” Theatrical films are produced over a much longer period of time than TV shows. For theatrical films the company keeps footing until the director Is satisfied with every thing. In TV the company must complete an hour- long show In seven days. “The Bastard' had a longer shooting schedule than most TV shows, but , not as much as I would have liked," she said. “Still, I have to admit I like working In TV. The pace Is much faster. You don't get to know the director, the writer or your fellow ac tors as well on a movie, but when the cameras roll an actor must have all of his or her acting tools available and ready for use. It sharpens your wits, keeps you on your toes." Prior to being assigned the Anne Ware role in “The Bastard.” Ms. CattraU said she knew nothing of the story. Had never any of John Jakes' novels. “I thought of them more as American history,” she said. “And being EngUsh I suppose I didn't have the appreciation of American history that I should have. But after I read the script I was very impressed with the story and with the part of Atme Ware." It was like a dream come true for the young actress. As a chUd, she confessed, "I played dress up quite a lot I have heard most people become actors because of Iruecurlty, be cause they are really children to hate to grow up. Ihat could be true because acting gives me a chance to be someone else for a little whUe. I can act out my own fantasies — and get paid for doing It.” Also acting out “their own fantasies” In “The Bastard” or “Kent Family Chronicles” are Andrew Stevens as Kent, Tom Bos ley, Buddy Ebsen, Osmeron MltcheU, Lonte Greene, WlUlam Shatner, Patricia Neal, Eleanor Parker, Peter Bonerz, Dan Haggerty, Donald Pleasence and Keenan Wyrm. If the show Is a success, then plans may be made to adapt the rest of Jakes' novels for TV. Ms. CattraU said she wasn't so sure sHe liked the idea. “In t second novel Atme Vfa dies,” she said.
