Plonk Jr., formerly of Kings Mountain, has been ap pointed to the faculty of the Bowman Gray School of Medicine as instructor In surgery. His appointment was announced by Dr. Richard Janeway, dean. A 1W9 graduate of the University of North Oarollna at Chapel Hill, Plonk received the M.D. degree from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine. He completed a surgical residency at North Carolina Baptist Hospital In Winston-Salem and was chief resident for one year. He returned recently from a traveling fellowship appointment In peripheral vascular surgery in Charleston S.C. Plonk Is the son of Dr. and Mrs. George W. Plonk of 902 Crescent Circle, Kings Mountain. He and his wife, the former Judy Morris, have three daughters. Feemster, son of Mrs. Lois S. Feemster, Route 2. Bessemer City, N.C., recently participated In the first Return of Forces to Germany (REFORGER) exercise to be held In winter. REFORGER 79, a strategic mobility exer cise, demonstrates the U.S. capability to move by air and sea to reinforce NAIO rapidly In a crisis situation. The Reforger units join U.S. units stationed In Germany and allied elements for the exercise In an area between Nor- thern Baden- Wuerttemberg and Eastern Bavaria. Army National Guard and .^rmy Reserve units also are Included In Reforger, one of NATQis largest annual exercises. The soldier Is a member of the 1st Armored Division In Germany. A distinguished North Carolina cltlsen will receive an honorary degree from Gardner- Webb College In ceremonies during com mencement exercises May 19. Acting on the recom mendation of the College faculty, the board of trustees approved awarding the degree Doctor of Humanities to Charles L. (Ranee) Henderson of Morganton. Henderson has been director of the North Oarollna Schools for the Deaf since 1970, and la also superintendent of the North Carolina Schools for the Deaf In Morganton. Ranee Henderson Is well-known to the cltlxena of North Oarollna for his work with the deaf and his Involvement In civic af fairs. In 1977 he received the (Tltatlon of Ap- preelatlan from the North Oarollna American Legion Auxiliary. That same year, he received the President’s An>reclatlon Award from the North Carolina Association of the Deaf. In 197S he received the Distinguished Club President award from the IQwanls International and also that year, the Distinguished Service Award from Lenolr-Rhyne College. In 1962, Hen derson was chosen as the Outstanding Graduate of the Oregon College of Education. A member of the First Baptist Church of Morganton, where he has served as deacon and Sunday School teacher for the deaf, he la also a member of several civic organizations. In 1977-78 he was president of the Lake James Environmental Association and district chairman of the Boy Scouts of America, Tableroek District. Also In 1978 he was treasurer of 'dha' ' Geaifedwiioeif- of ^ectdlves of American Schools for the Deaf and on the board of directors of CLOSE-UP. That same year he was a member of the National Advisory Oouncll of the Center on Cbntlnulng Education. The Directors of the Center on Deafness of California State University, Nor- thrldge, says of Mr. Henderson, "He has given leadership not only In his own organisation, but throughout the state and the nation. In the field of deafness he has Initiated and developed a program of services ranging from pre-school through College that Is a model for the entire nation.’* A native of Kings Mountain, he la married to Betty Ledford Henderson, a school administrator, also of Kings Mountain, and they have two children: David, age 19; and JuUa, age 18. Henderson Is a graduate of the Oregon College of Education, where he 'wcelved both his B.S. and M.S. degrees; and Oallfomla State University at Northrldge, where he Reynolds Stationed In Colorado received his M.A. degree In School Administration. Previous positions In clude: social studies and language teacher, grades 6-18, and principal of the high school and vocational department, Oregon School for the Deaf; Director of the West Suburban Association for the Hearing Handlcai^d, Illinois, and Instructor of teacher-trsdnlng program of the deaf at DePaul University In Chicago, which he holds con currently with his other positions. Other professional and civic activities Include: boiurd of trustees. Center for the Rights of the Desd; and board of advisors, Gardner-Webb College. Past Civic activities Include: President of the Burke County Community Concert Association, 1974; RANCE HENDERSON President of the Burke CCunty United Fund, 1978; President of the Morganton Klwanls Club, 1976; Lieutenant Governor of the Carolina Klwanls District, Division l-B, 1976; and chairman of the Tbblerock District Scout Camp Development of the Boys Scouts of America, 1976. President Craven Williams, In describing Mr. Henderson to the CbUege Board of Trustees, said, "A person who has achieved national distinction as a leader In his chosen field, and who also speaks out boldly on religious values, la a rare Individual, worthy of recognition and com mendation by this OoUege." COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Senior Master Sergeant Richard D. Reynolds, son of Mrs. Ehrelyn Reynolds of 608 Gantt St., Kings Mountain, N.C., has arrived for duty at Peterson AFB, Cblo. The sergeant, a food service superintendent with a unit of the Aerospace Defense Command, previously served at Osan AB, Republic of Korea. Sergeant Reynolds Is a 1967 graduate of Centrsd High School.
