April 3, 1979 Kinston Tourney Winner HARVEST FRESH FLORIDA Kinston defeated Charlotte Youth League 58-36 SatuHay to win the second annual Tar Heel State Classic at the comiAunity center gym. The Kingston team went 'through the double elimination event un defeated. Their only close game was a 41-40 victory over Kings Mountain in a second round contest. Kings Mountain finished third, losing out in the semi-finals to CYAC 57-52. Iccis Moye, the sixth man on the Kinston team, won the most valuable player award. He was named to the all- tournament team, along with teammate Billy Gardner, Tim Smith and Eddie Price of CYAC, Brad Reynolds of Kings Mountain and Jeff Appling of Plaza. Kings Mountain defeated Bessemer City in its first round game, 47-39, before losing the one-point decision to Kinston in the second round. Lavar Curry scored 16' points and Reyncrids 10 to lead the victory over BC. Kings Mountain jumped to a 28-17 halftime lead and led by 39 after three quarters. In the loss to Kinston, KM had the ball with 19 seconds to play but missed a final shot. Curry scored 19 points and Curt Pressley 10 to lead the KM effort KM jumped off to a 12-4 lead by a 19-8 scoring' advantage for Kinston in the second quarter was the big difference. KM bounced back to defeat Bessemer City in the third round, 47-36, and eliminated Plaza 48-39 before running-into a hot- shooting CYAC team in the semis. Reynolds scored 15 points and Curry 11 against Plaza and Reynolds and Curry hit 20 apiece in the loss to CYAC. Moye came off the bench to score 21 points for ^ Kinston in the title game. HARVEST FRESH CALIFORNIA AV0CAD0S..2 COUNTRY STAND FRESH $13* Woodlnddge To Host ^ Tourney Some of the top amateur golfers in North Carolina will compete in the Miller Lite Amateur Golf Classic at Woodbridge Country Club May 18-20. Woodbridge has been selected as one of the regional sites of the Miller promotion which annually slates golf tournaments all over ' Western North Carolina. “Woodbridge is pleased to host this tournament,” said pro Gene ' Blanton. “Cleveland County has an established county championship, so the Miller Lite Invitational is just for fun and prizes. It will also give us a tour nament to re-open our back nine holes to the public.” The back nine holes at Woodbridge have un dergone extensive re conditioning and will be ready for tournament play in May. In addition to the tourney at Woodbridge, Miller will be putting on events this year at High Vista Country Club near Asheville, Catawba Country Club near Hickory, Glen Oaks near Maiden and Bel-Aire Gub near Greensboro.
