Ms. Perrin will have more than Just a passing Interest In the city. She has beeh contracted by the City of Kings Mountain to Identify historical and architecturally significant structures. Ms. Perrin, an architectural hlstoiian was hired under a grant from the North Carolina Depart ment of Cultural Resorces Division of Archives and History. She will be working In Kings Mountain to Identify significant properties and make recommendations for their preservation and potential use. A native of OreenvlUe S.C., she received an A.B. In History from Salem College In Winston-Salem, and her M.A. In History with em phasis In Historic Preservation from Wake Forrest University In Winston- Salem. Her professional mem- 'bershlps Include National Trust for Historical Preservation. Preser vation Society of N.C., S.C. Historical Society and Charleston, iS.C. Ubrary Society. Last summer Ms. Penin did a similar study for the Oty of Reld- svllle. According to Ms. Perrin, whe will be looking at every structure In Kings Mountain - not Just the big. fine old homes found here, but also commercial suid industrial struc tures, churches, schools and even groups of mill houses. ‘‘Sometimes a structure Is not significant Individually,” Ms. Perrin explained. "But In groups, such as the groups of mill houses here, they may be unique.” When Ms. Perrin finds a structure or a group of buildings significant either historically, culturaUy or architecturally, she will note a brief description sind take photographs of it for her records. After the Initial Inventory Is complete, she will go back to particularly significant sites for more In-depth research and documentation. Later she will make an assessment of her flndlng.s The assessment will Include In formation on what additional research will be needed and which properties will receive further at tention. Baaed on these findings, additional archival and field research will be conducted and the location of sdl the properties will be mapped on local planning maps. When the final assessment of the Inventory Is complete, priority rating on the relative significance of the property Inventoried, recom mendations as to Individual properties or areas which should be further researched for national register nominations and recom mendations concerning future preservation planning In the com munity will be made. Throughout the process of the Inventory, community education will be conducted to make Kings Mountain residents aware of the program. Its purposes and Its fin dings. Ms. Perrin said she Is hopeful area cltlsens will take an Interest In the project. She pointed out many people are not aware of the numerous historically significant buildings In Kings Mountsiln. While Ms. Penin Is Identifying structures In town, she will also be talking with area cltlsens about Kings Mountain and lt‘s history.
