The Ousu-dsmen worked mainly in civilian communities on civic actions projects. Coming from Winston Salem, Charlotte, Hen derson, Kings Mountain, Shelby, Warrenton, North Wllksboro, and Taylor sville, these Guardsmen worked on high school athletic faculties, a Boy Scout camp, an armory addition, and a pistol range. . Main projects this year by the engineers were school athletic facilities at Lexington and Kinston. They also performed some' primary clearing and construction at a Boy Scout camp near White Oak, an addition to an armory at High Point, and a new pistol range at Butner. At Lexington the Guardsmen are grading and buUdlng a basebaU diamond, constructing a buUdlng to house the press box, concession stand, and the restrooms, and grading for tennis courts and a field house. The Kinston project Includes grading for a now athletic faculty at the high school, and at White Oak engineers are clearing land and buUdlng roads and some support struc tures as the development of that Scout Camp gets underway. An additional buUdlng on the grounds at National Guard armory at High Point marks that project and at Butner the engineers are working on a new pistol range and crushing rock. These combat engineers are not Umlted only to civic action projects. They began their summer en campment with a few days of realistic combat exercise training slmUar to situations which they would face If caUed to active duty during time of war.
