Kings Mountain High football
standouts John Barnette and
Travis Bell last week signed foot-
ball scholarships with Liv-
ingstone College.
They are the only two
members of last year’s Moun-
taineer eleven to sign college
scholarships.
Both played offense and
defense for the Mounties, who
finished 3-7 in the always-rugged
Southwestern 3-A Conference.
Livingstone recruited Barnette
as a defensive back and Bell as a
tailback and defensive back.
Barnette played end and
defensive back for the Mounties.
He was the team’s top pass
receiver and teamed with
southpaw quarterback Eric
Spicer to perfect an “alley-oop”
pass which was the big key to

KM’s three straight victories late
in the year. Barnette caught the
winning touchdown pass in a 6-0
upset win over South Point’s
Red Raiders and he caught a
similar touchdown pass late in
the first half against Shelby and
had the Mounties on top 7-0 un-
til late in the fourth quarter.
On defense, he made 41
tackles, caused two fumbles and
recovered two fumbles. He turn-
ed one of his fumble recoveries
into a 65-yard touchdown run
against league champion Crest.

Bell came on strong in the se-
cond game of the season against
Ashbrook and finished the year
as the Mounties’ number two
rusher with over 600 yards. He
had over 100 yards rushing
against Ashbrook and had a
season’s high of 138 in a 190
win over R-S Central.
Despite an injury which
sidelined him late in the year, he
made 31 tackles and intercepted
two passes. He returned one of"
the interceptions for a
touchdown.
