Kings Mountain High football standouts John Barnette and Travis Bell last week signed foot- ball scholarships with Liv- ingstone College. They are the only two members of last year’s Moun- taineer eleven to sign college scholarships. Both played offense and defense for the Mounties, who finished 3-7 in the always-rugged Southwestern 3-A Conference. Livingstone recruited Barnette as a defensive back and Bell as a tailback and defensive back. Barnette played end and defensive back for the Mounties. He was the team’s top pass receiver and teamed with southpaw quarterback Eric Spicer to perfect an “alley-oop” pass which was the big key to Thursday, May 13, 1982-KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Page 5A ‘Barnette, Bell Sign KM’s three straight victories late in the year. Barnette caught the winning touchdown pass in a 6-0 upset win over South Point’s Red Raiders and he caught a similar touchdown pass late in the first half against Shelby and had the Mounties on top 7-0 un- til late in the fourth quarter. On defense, he made 41 tackles, caused two fumbles and recovered two fumbles. He turn- ed one of his fumble recoveries into a 65-yard touchdown run against league champion Crest. * La) * Bell came on strong in the se- cond game of the season against Ashbrook and finished the year as the Mounties’ number two rusher with over 600 yards. He had over 100 yards rushing against Ashbrook and had a season’s high of 138 in a 190 win over R-S Central. Despite an injury which sidelined him late in the year, he made 31 tackles and intercepted two passes. He returned one of" the interceptions for a touchdown. In addition to the athletic awards, the sponsoring Booster’s Club will present its third annual Booster of the Year Award. Williams, a former basketball coach and athletic director at Owen High School in Swan- nanoa, helped coach the Tar Heels to the national champion- ship in basketball this past season.
